There are so many myths about “good moms”. It would seem, that in order to be a good mom one must be something more than human. Whether it’s the expectations we put on ourselves or those placed upon us by others, people don’t seem to compassionate about a mom being depressed or even simply having a bad day.
In fact, good moms must have it all together, work at a prestigious company, cook from-scratch meals using ingredients that most people can’t pronounce and most of all are never found without a smile on their faces! I mean, children are so innocent, loving and precious, right? What would a mom ever have to frown about?
Typing it out and even reading all written out makes it seem absurd, even laughable and yet that’s what our culture seems to tell us, isn’t it? Good moms don’t get depressed. Good moms don’t struggle with parenting. Good moms have it all together. The children of good moms never misbehave or throw a raging fit in the middle of isle seven of the local supermarket.
I recently wrote a piece that was published on Kids Activities Blog on this very topic. Bad days, depression, good mothers. If these three can, in fact go together. It’s called Good moms have bad days and you can hope over to their site to read it in it’s entirety. While the post deals more with bad days than clinical depression, as a mom who has struggled with both I know it’s possible to be a great mom, while actively getting help for depression as well.
More than anything, don’t be afraid to admit that you are a good mom. There are so many things that all good moms have in common and even more things that great moms do differently from one another, and that’s totally okay. Loving on our kids in a way that makes sense in our families is what matters most. Even when it’s hard and even when the days (and nights) are long.
Can’t wait to hear what you think of my “good moms have bad days” post on the other site!

Lovely post!! We ALL have bad days. Even that all pulled together in the cute outfit with the well behaved, well groomed children. Really!
