What is laundry day like at your house? Or is it more of “laundry life”, never quite getting ahead and certainly never being done?
I am definitely somewhere in the middle of those two, but I’m finding a rythm that is taking a lot of the stress and annoyance out of laundry.
Here are some tricks to make laundry day (or laundry life) easier!
1. Schedule – I have a flexible laundry schedule and it’s working great for us! Throughout the week, I wash a load here and there of “essentials”. Things like the clothes my hubby wears to work, my son’s favorite shirts (you know, the ones that MUST be worn daily) and my comfy jeans. These items get thrown in together and washed throughout the week in small batches. Then, on the weekends I devote more time to just running the washer/dryer and folding clothes. Essentially getting “caught up” and washing everything I can find that’s dirty! The cycle re-starts the next week! If you need to wash more frequently, try these tips, from a mom of 4. She does one load a day and has awesome ideas on how to keep things under control.
2. Aim for no re-dos – Before, I would have to re-wash clothes semi frequently because I would have forgotten them in the washer. My goal now is to never run the washer/dryer while I’m away from the house so I don’t forget about it and let the clothes mildew. This may limit the times that I’m able to wash clothes, but it also means that I’m saving water, time and electricity by only washing things once.
3. Organize your laundry room – a messy, disorganized laundry room makes life so much more difficult. It’s so hard to be productive in a messy space, which is why I LOVED these tips from my friend Becky on how to organize your laundry room!
4. Quality soap – Make sure you are using the best soap. There were days when I would try to buy the cheap-o laundry detergent and I even made it myself for awhile but I hated not being able to rely on what I was buying. I finally decided it was worth it to buy the best brands so that my kids wouldn’t be breaking out into rashes and I wouldn’t have to re-wash things that didn’t quite get clean enough. – Clorox is one of those quality brands! They have come out with a new product called My Ultimate Care Bleach (available at Target).
It is soft on skin, so you don’t have to worry about washing delicates with it and it’s safe to pour straight on clothes. My husband wears solid white shirts all the time so this is the perfect way to keep those shirts, actually white without nasty bleach smells. I call that a major win for laundry day!
