There’s nothing like having a baby to make you realize that everything in your home is a safety hazard. As your sweet newborn grows, learns to crawl and learns to get into EVERYTHING you’ll start to see danger at every turn.
If you have time before baby is too mobile, you’ll want to start making your way through each room to get baby proofing equipment.
Living Room Baby Proofing Essentials
Start with the traditional plug covers. Babies are fascinated by little holes, so make sure the plugs are covered so they don’t try to push their little fingers, or anything else inside the plugs!
Next work your way over to the coffee table. You can get foam covers for the corners of the coffee table so baby doesn’t get hurt if they fall near the table. This is a big one since babies often use coffee tables for balance as they are learning to walk and those corners can be sharp!
Door stoppers are another often overlooked baby hazard. Babies love playing with these, so make sure your door stoppers have covers that can’t come off or no covers on the end at all.
Make sure your TV is mounted to the wall so you don’t risk baby knocking the TV down onto himself. Even if it’s up high on a piece of furniture, babies can be little climbers and frequently bang against large furniture. Making sure it’s mounted correctly is the only way you remove this hazard without also removing your TV from the house!
If you have living room blinds another huge safety concern is the cords on your blinds. Select Blinds.com has a great solution for this problem. You can go cordless with your blinds to completely eliminate this risk in your home. This year, SelectBlinds.com became the first custom window covering provider to go 100 percent cordless. Each month, Parents for Window Blind Safety and SelectBlinds.com are partnering together for the Project Cordless giveaway! They are giving away an upgrade for an entire home, military housing unit, daycare facility or apartment to #gocordless for free! You can nominate your favorite place by submitting a 30-second video here.
Baby Proofing Tips for the kitchen
In the kitchen, make sure you get a lock for your oven so baby is not able to pull it open while things are cooking. You’ll want to do the same for your dishwasher too.
Also make sure that you move any dry beans and other small foods up higher in your pantry AND move all soaps and cleaning supplies up high as well.
You can also get childproof cabinet locks, but you’ll still want to move dangerous things up high as crafty kids quickly learn to get around those childproof locks.
Also make sure that your plastic bags are out of reach from the baby so she can’t pull them down and play with them.
Bedroom baby proofing tips
One of the biggest things overlooked in bedrooms for children is attaching large furniture to the walls. So many deaths happen each year when kids climb on drawers and pull large furniture onto themselves!
Also, make sure that there is no recall on your baby’s crib, especially if you got the crib second hand and ensure that there’s nothing in baby’s bed that baby can smother on. This includes stuffed animals with bead eyes that can be chewed off and even crib bumpers.
Make sure that baby’s toy box doesn’t have a lid that they can pinch their fingers on or that will bonk their heads if they lean into the box to find a favorite toy.
Baby proofing the bathroom
You can get a variety of different covers for the bathtub spout. This can make slips and accidents in the tub a lot less dangerous. We got a small inflatable one and it was great!
There are also toilet locking baby proofing things, but we preferred putting a child lock door knob on the bathroom to keep baby out of that room all together unless she’s having a bath.
