From above the world of Cars flies Disney’s Planes! This is SUCH a fun movie! We didn’t make it to the theatre to watch it when it was there, so I was really happy to have the opportunity to review a DVD copy with my kids! Watching it together makes the perfect family night activity!
This movie is all about courage, which came at a perfect time for my Little Man, since he’s been struggling with a few fears at night time lately. It can be a struggle to talk about deep concepts like courage with small children, because they don’t always have the attention span to sit still for a long conversation. This is why we used books to help prepare him for the birth of his baby sister. Books and movies are great tools for teaching values to kids and preparing them for transitions. Movies can hold a little one’s attention for far longer than almost any other activity, so if your little one could use some lessons in courage, Planes is a fun place to start!
The movie is all about Dusty, a little crop duster plane that wants to race around the world in a huge contest with the best of race-planes. The biggest problem is…he’s afraid of heights. Dusty faces bullying from other airplanes, but has very supportive friends that help him through it, even when he has to face his worst fears… flying high!
I don’t want to spoil the ending, but it creates such a good example of courage for young children, in a great way. I appreciate the movie creates context for me to talk to my son about being brave, and having courage when he’s scared or intimidated! And I love that it does this without bringing up anything else that could potentially be scary for him. The movie is fun and upbeat, and keeps you cheering for the ultimate underdog, Dusty!
Along with teaching courage, the movie shows a lot about friendship, teamwork and honesty. It’s a fantastic movie that sparks all sorts of conversation with littles ones about values!
Watching this movie with my little one is definitely something we will all enjoy for years to come! I have a feeling it’s going to be a family favorite!
