I’m slowly coming to terms with the fact that I am raising my kids in a tech centered world. For better or for worse, this is where we are, so I’ve decided to make it “for better” in our family! I love finding fun apps that my kids will enjoy and that will help them learn while they play.
This week we downloaded the Green Eggs & Ham Read & Learn app to try with the kids, and it has been so fun!!!
Dr. Seuss books have always been among our favorites to read, and I love that this turns our favorite book into an interactive learning experience. The app reads the book to the child, while highlighting each word so they can follow along.
You can also interact with the page, learning more words, playing with the characters and finding stars! Every page has a hidden star which, when found, challenges your child to a little game. The Learning Activites cover reading comprehension, spelling, rhyming, and phonics. Kids can also tilt, tap, swipe and drag as they search for surprises and more learning activities.
The optional activities are aligned with Kindergarten level English Language Arts standards, but I’ve had fun working through it with my four year old. They are done in small pieces so he is able to get help as he works through them. I have no doubt that in a few months he’ll be doing it fully on his own.
For moms and dads there is even a section where you can track the time your children spend in the app working on their reading skills. The Green Eggs and Ham – Read & Learn app has joined the award winning line of Dr. Seuss digital book apps produced by Oceanhouse Media. All of their options are great; I definitely want to get “The Cat in the Hat” and “Dr Seuss’s ABC” apps, too! They have more “Read & Learn” apps coming out near the holiday season, too!
You can download your own copy of the app here. It is iOS exclusive.
I also found out through this app that Green Eggs and Ham was originally published on August 12th 1960 – so this app is the perfect way to celebrate the book’s 55th birthday. SO FUN!!!
