My son started elementary school today. There was a stray tear or two from me and lots of excited nerves on his end, but we made it through.
Elementary school is already so different and new. He’ll tell you that the main, and most important difference is the TWO times they get to play on the playground, but for me, it’s meant a lot more significant changes than number of turns outdoors (though I love that change for him).
It means learning about pickup lines. Oh, the dreaded pickup lines. I already know why everyone hates them and I’m trying to find a way to survive ours, as well as the awkward 45 minutes between preschool release and Kindergarten release. The area by the school also has horrible wifi, so I can’t just park and work or work on my duolingo (Spanish-learning app) score while I wait. First world problem at it’s worst.
Elementary school has also meant getting more serious about those take-home folders. My kids had them in preschool, and I’m pretty sure I lost both forever after the first couple weeks of school. Never replaced them, and the teachers just sort of shoved art projects in the kids backpacks every week. It really wasn’t a big deal and the most important thing that was ever communicated via backpack was the learning calendar for that month, and even that didn’t require any correspondence on my part.
Now, the school folder is my lifeline to the classroom. It tells me how kiddo behaved that day, and gives me instructions on things I need to work on with him before he goes back to school. No homework yet, but I’m ready for it. This is a new era and we’re prepared (for day one, anyways).
Parent involvement has gone into overdrive as well. They’ve already told us about numerous volunteer opportunities so we can be involved in the kids school days and I love it!
Hopefully not super lice. Other than car lines and common core math, super lice is the next thing on the official list of things parents dread about their kids starting school. Cross your fingers and toes your kids don’t get lice of the super, or regular variety.
It makes me itchy just thinking about it. When I lived overseas, lice was a part of life. You could get rid of them, but they’d just be back the next week, because of all the kids around. Thankfully, that’s not the case here. I’ve already stocked up on Nix® so we’re prepared for even the rumor of super lice. Nix® is new, safe and effective on regular lice, super lice AND their eggs. So, if lice happens, you know what you’ll need.
Nix® even has a lice tracker, where you can type in your zip code and see the lice incident level in your area.
I love that Nix® is non-toxic and pesticide free, so I don’t have to worry when I inevitably use it on my kids at some point this year. It’s the easiest solution that when implemented fast enough can save a TON of time and money on cleaning everything out.
So with ALL the changes that have come with elementary school, at least that’s one less thing to worry about.
We’ll be dealing with drop-off and pickup lines all year. I’ll have to actually keep track of the little green folder for the forseeable future, but at least lice won’t be a big dramatic thing if it happens at our school.
