A couple weeks ago I wrote a post entitled Top 10 blogging tips. It was a fun post in which I shared the biggest things I’ve learned in my 2 years of blogging. In the comments section on that post we started discussing how to write engaging posts, ones that draw the reader in and invite them to join the conversation in the comments section. Since that discussion, I decided to write this post to share my best tips for you about writing engaging (comment-inviting) posts! These are things I’ve learned from my own experience writing on my blog and reading other blogs!
1. Ask questions – I’m much more likely to comment on a post if I see that the writer has invited it. By “ask questions” I mean more than just: “hey I love comments, please leave a comment!”. I’m looking for discussion questions, I’m looking for bloggers who want my input and don’t feel like they already know everything. Invite your readers to engage with you on your topic.
2. Write with your readers in mind – Your readers want to feel like you are writing to them, not just venting your own thoughts and frustrations looking for affirmation. Share your thoughts and your stories, but as you share, think about how it applies to your reader and what you want them to get from your posting. Being focused on the reader as you write is one of the best ways to write in a way that engages them and makes them want to comment on your writing.
3. Invite a dialogue, don’t just ask for their stories – I know I just wrote all about asking questions of your readers, but sticking a random question at the bottom of you post is not enough. It’s easy to tell your story and then as a “question” (see #1) at the end to just say “has anything like this ever happend to you? tell me your story.” And while that does invite the reader to comment, (good job!) it doesn’t invite them to engage in a dialogue with you. Ask if they have ever felt what you were feeling, ask them if they think you are crazy for how your reacted to certain things, ask what they would have done or seek out their advice. Dig in to the heart of the post and then find creative ways to ask them to share their hearts with you as well.
4. Interact with your readers via social media – I have found that most of my top commenters are people that I’m often interacting with on this blog’s facebook page or twitter. I truly want to get to know my readers and encourage them in their day to day life. I am able to do that somewhat through blogging but even more so through our interactions via social media.
5. Don’t Write “down” to your readers – One thing that I absolutely can’t stand, is if I’m reading a blog and I feel like the writer is “talking down” to me in her writing. You can tell, even through blogging, if a person believes s/he is smarter, cooler or funnier than her audience, just don’t do it!
6. Be you – Be real and authentic, don’t try to sound so polished and professional that you lose your own voice and personality. I’ve read posts that sound more like they belong in a text book than on a personal blog. I’m not saying you have to dumb down the way you write, just don’t use language that you wouldn’t use in normal conversation. Let the readers see who you are through your writing!
What about you? What makes you want to comment on a blog? Is there anything that discourages you from commenting?

Reb @ Sink or Swim says
I think finding your authentic voice is the most important one.. I’ve seen many bloggers try to imitate a popular style and it just comes across as forced!
Tomekha says
That last point really hit home to me. I’ve recently redesigned my blog and one comment from someone who helped me in the process is that I need to polish off my writing, make it more mature and stop using certain emoticons and I have been trying to do that but I’m struggling cuz it doesn’t feel REAL! It doesn’t feel like me – it doesn’t flow anymore.
I think I just need to express myself the way I’m comfortable doing it.
Paula says
You definitely have to be YOU! Some people may not appreciate the emoticons but others will, so you will find the audience that appreciates your voice! I’m sure some people don’t enjoy my writing style, and that’s okay…you can’t please every one ;)

I love reading posts about blogging and this one didn’t disappoint me at all!! I love to comment on blogs to encourage the writer but it can be difficult when the content is so completely above my head. I love the smaller blogs because they have interaction in the comments and not just comments that stand alone.
Paula says
Thanks for the input Judith! :) I agree, there is much more interaction on smaller blogs, I imagine the larger ones just don’t have enough time to keep up, can’t blame them for that, but it is fun when you can interact with the blogger!
Susannah says
Great tips, girl! :-)

Lisa Newlin says
These are actually great tips. I agree that interacting with your readers is not only key to return visitors, but it also makes the experience far more fun. I think visiting each other’s blogs and commenting is what makes it more rewarding.
I know there is one humor blog written by a guy, and I used to read it and comment on it all the time. He never responded to the comments or engaged, and he never came to my page either. I finally stopped visiting his page, even though I enjoyed his blog, simply because I found his behavior arrogant and rude. It was like he wanted people to read his stuff, but he couldn’t be bothered with anyone else’s. I think arrogance comes across more than bloggers think it does.
Thanks for this helpful post. I’m visiting from the blog hop. :-)
Paula says
aww I’m sorry you had that experience! It is definitely hard to maintain blog comments! I can’t say I reply to EVERY comment but I do try to respond whenever I can.

Awesome tips! I’m getting lots of views, but very little comments. I really enjoy blogging and being a part of the whole blogging community. I’d definitely comment on someones blog who was going through something similiar to me or who is genuine, open and nice. That’s what it’s all about!

Flora Morris Brown says
Hi Paula,
These are great tips, especially #6. It has been a process for me to become more “me” in blogging. In academic writing, we are encouraged to leave out the personal.
When I began blogging I noticed some bloggers were too personal and vulgar for my taste. I soon learned, however, that there were readers who preferred what I would call TMI, just as there are readers who prefer the more impersonal “just the facts, M’am” style.
When we are authentic we will attract our rightful readers and repel the rest. And that’s good.
Botanic Bleu says
Fiora Morris Brown,
So true! You have shared exactly what I was thinking. Different styles appeal to different people, and different topics appeal to people with similar interests. Not everyone enjoys the same style or topic.
I found Tip #5 very interesting…writing “down” to readers is directly related to different styles for different people. What one person sees as writing “down” another person will see totally differently. When two people know each other and have face-to-face discussions as well as written discussions, written messages are read in context full of shared previous conversations.
Consider ’email.’ For years, I had a job in which I had to write emails to large groups of people every day. When I first started writing all those large mass messages, I found that sometimes my readers did not ‘read’ the email in the same tone of voice that I wrote the ’email.’ Facial expressions, voice inflections, and body language are all missing from the written word. As a result, messages were read in a vacuum of context. Researchers say that the vast majority of understanding a conversation is conveyed through non-verbal communication.
No, I am not trying to write “down” to anyone by explaining some of the perils of writing to large masses of people. Life is hard enough when we know one another. And for bloggers, we take on extremely hard writing assignments because we share with the whole world our writing. In my previous job, I at least was writing to large groups of people with a built-in set of shared goals and interests. Not so in the blogging world. Our audience is extremely diverse with no pre-set common interests.
YIKES! As I write this, I am even more conscious of that than ever before! Pretty scary for all of us who try to express ourselves and hope to find others with common interests.

Agreed! It’s so important to engage with your readers because that’s the point of it all, right? I’ve been trying to make sure I have some question or prompt at the end of my posts to engage my readers. Point #3 is definitely one I need to remember. It’s one thing to ask questions of readers, it’s another to actually invite them into dialogue. I definitely need to get more personal with my question-asking (“Is it just me, or have you experienced this too?” “Am I crazy, or do you agree with me?” etc)
This is some great advice–thank you!

Great post. Thank you for all the tips. It is very important how we word questions at the end especially if we want people to respond, I am trying to work on this so this post has given me some good ideas and a good jumping off point.
Kayla@Renown and Crowned says
I’ve begun to notice (and try to implement) the “let’s converse” blogs versus the “here’s my thoughts. I want you to comment but I’m not giving you a reason or means to comment” blogs. I started my blog as the latter, but have been able to tweak it and get more comments. Not a lot, just “more.”
The biggest discouragement from commenting is a form that doesn’t allow name/URL! I blog on wordpress, but my nickname and web address are different, which causes issues. I like plain Jane “enter your name, email, and website” comment boxes. :)
Amy says
Thanks for these tips! I’m visiting from We Like to Learn as We Go. Do you think Word of the Day posts are not appropriate? I am posting words that I actually didn’t know either.

Kristin @ Kit's Crafts says
Navigating the blog-o-sphere has been quite a challenge for me. I REALLY appreciate when you give advice like this post that is so helpful! I will definitely be including questions at the end of every blog post from now on. Thanks again!
Jessica says
Thanks for these ideas! What makes me want to comment? Hm…a lot of time, it has to do with the content. Questions are great, but what really gets me going is content I’m passionate about. If I read something that I feel is spot-on, I’ll comment. If I read something I feel like I can add something worthwhile to, I’ll comment.
I’ve been totally turned off of blogs by the authors “talking down” to me. Actually, the one that comes to mind is someone who I really appreciated her blog, but when in a discussion through comments, she talked down to me, I was pretty insulted and don’t comment on her blog anymore. I still appreciate some of the things she writes, but not the same as I used to. I think we bloggers have to be careful not to become too full of ourselves and also be careful of other’s feelings. It’s easy to insult people on the internet. :)

Very interesting post. I really struggle with the ‘engaging question’ at the end. To me, it feels a bit beggy, but then again, I like to respond to those on other blogs. It makes it easier to leave meaningful comments. And the writing with the reader in mind is something where I could improve too, so these tips are very helpful!

I have read and re-read these tips that I found via Pinterest. I am working so hard at my blog, and engaging others on social media. I have tried engaging others with questions and I am always left hanging. This came to me at a point when I am just so disappointed that I don’t seem to engage my readers. I will keep trying and have printed out this page to keep pinned above my desk to remind me of these tips… I hope it helps!

With all of my blogs, I always had comments very early on, even with as little as 25 views a day. Asking questions and interacting with readers/commenters were huge for me. I end almost every post with a question because I don’t want people to just comment, I want them to start the conversation and invite more conversation.
