These days when you hear the words make money at home it’s easy to let your mind wander to things that involve emailing all of your friends with messages about why they should buy products from you.
I’m ALL for working from home, and doing what you love, but I’ve never been a good salesperson, and never really wanted to have to sell things to my friends, so those traditional work from home strategies have never been something I wanted to invest my time and energy into.
That doesn’t mean you can’t make money from home, even with kids to take care of. I have personally done ALL of the things listed here at one time or another, and they have had a huge impact on our family finances.
At first, I just did a few of these to earn an extra $20 or so each month or even to save money for Christmas. After a few years, I discovered a career I love from home and I know work from home full time. You can aim for a few extra bucks a month or work your way up to a full time income with some of these, it’s all up to you!

Thredup – We all know selling old clothing at a thrift store is an option, but let’s be real, who has time for that? When I discovered Thredup it was a huge game changer. They ship you a HUGE cleanout bag and you fill it up with clothes, shoes, purses, hats etc. They take women and kids clothing so, you can clean out your closet and the kid’s closet at the same time! Fill up the bag, seal it and drop in by the post office. You don’t have to worry about shipping costs or anything else. They’ll get the bag, go through it and send you $ either in visa gift card or store credit (your choice) in exchange for your clothes. Items that aren’t accepted are donated, so you get rid of your stuff easily either way.
It’s also a great online thrift store that can help you save on clothes. If you need new shoes for the kids or new clothes for you, you can choose to go with the store credit and order what you need for free. You also get a free $10 store credit when you sign up with my link AND when you do, you’ll be given a link that gives you $10 credit if you refer your friends too. This is something that your friends will actually WANT to hear about though since it saves them money (there’s lots to buy for under $10 so they could literally just order something for free and be done with it!).
E-bates – Technically this is one that requires you to spend money to make it. BUT if you already do a bit of shopping online, signing up for Ebates and clicking through them can be a GREAT way for you to earn cashback on purchases you were already going to make. I used this during back to school shopping last year and got tons of money back just for ordering the kids backpacks and new clothes (that I was already planning to buy) online. I bought a bunch of it through Kohl’s and was given Kohl’s cash AND Ebates cashback for my purchases so the amount of money I made/saved on those transactions was INSANE (I wish I had added it all up!). They now have an app that allows you to get cashback by shopping in stores when you use it too. It’s such an easy way to make extra money on what you’re already spending each month! Protip: you can get cashback by shopping at target too AND you get $10 in your account just for signing up with my link!
Swagbucks – This is a site that allows you to earn points a VARIETY of different ways. The points can then be cashed out for gift cards (among other things). I usually go for amazon cards or save for Christmas and grab gift cards to wherever I’m buying gifts. When you sign up to Swagbucks you can get points for everything from watching videos, to taking surveys, to shopping online and even just searching on the internet. I’ve done all of the above, but now I just leave Swagbucks as my default search engine and tend to make $20 or so a month in search rewards and taking quick daily polls. If I have time I’ll watch a few videos while I work on my computer or something. When I was working hard at it, I’ve made a lot more in a month by doing surveys and even playing some of the games. I paid for our entire Christmas one year using Swagbucks gift cards! Sign up for free here.
Start a blog – I had been blogging for fun for a long time before I realized there were people making money doing it. Blogging is now my FULLTIME job. If you are interested in starting a blog here’s a tutorial that walks you through it. “without selling anything to your friends”
Lol, I need to send this post to all those people I always see on Facebook trying to sell their stupid… tummy wraps or protein drinks or whatever other crap they’re always trying to peddle on there. But I suppose if they’re already at the point that they’re pushing that stuff on their Facebook friends, they’re probably too far gone anyway.
