We live in such a fast paced society, we’re all looking to save time wherever we can. I always feel like the kitchen tasks take up the most time in a family, simply because you have to be in there so much. 3 times a day you’re cooking meals and that doesn’t even include snacks or extra drink trips.
That’s a lot of time used up in the kitchen, which means it’s a great place to start when you’re looking to save time!
Start with quality – Make sure all the tools you are using in your kitchen are the best quality they can be. A lot of time can be wasted with untensils that don’t do their job quite right. And it’s not just knives and pans and such. Make sure you’re getting the best bang for your buck by grabbing Hefty ultra strong trash bags for your kitchen. They have active tear resistant technology for better puncture resistance, which means you won’t be wasting time double bagging your trash or picking up trash that fell to the floor when you were trying to take it out. That’s always the worst!
Get organized – Every few months take a good look at your kitchen and make sure it’s organized it the best way possible. It makes sense to move things around seasonally. In the Fall you’ll likely want your slow cooker down where it’s easily accessible, while in the Summer months it could easily be tucked away in a hard-to-reach corner of the pantry to make space for your blender (for yummy smoothies) and ice cream machine. You’d be amazed at how much time you save, by reorganizing a bit and making sure everything is really in the easiest place for you.
Meal plan – Yeah, I know those two little words always used to make me cringe too, but then I found an easier way. Do it once, forever. All you need is 30 solid meals your family likes and you can plan a month at a time. If you are a way better cook than I am, you could even change out the meal plan seasonally too. See how we do it here. You can download this printable for free by subscribing here to help you make your meal plan (the family can even rate the meals right there on the planner!).
Baby Steps – When things get out of control (as they always do when you’re raising kiddos), I’d put things off until I had enough time to tackle the entire kitchen area, getting everything back in order at once. Of course, we all know that if you are spending time focusing on fixing one area of the house, your kids will most certainly be focusing on destroying another area. And the circle goes on and on. My husband’s way is different though, and so smart! He just figures out one small manageable thing he can do each day and does that. He slowly works towards his goal. One day we’ll sweep and not worry about the mopping. Maybe the next we go through the kitchen and throw out everything yuck from the fridge, but we won’t bother wiping it down until the next day. Small, manageable pieces. Stuff gets done so much faster that way, and I’ve found I’m less stressed because I’m seeing progress being made intentionally, exactly a much as I aimed for each day, because I’m setting realistic expectations now. Instead of “ugh I need to clean the entire kitchen, it’s still a mess” I think “wow! I got all the trash thrown out, cleaned out the trash can and replaced it with Hefty Ultra Strong Trash Bags with Arm & Hammer odor neutralizers.” Okay, maybe I don’t think in that much detail… but it is nice to be able to take care of smell and overflowing trash in one swoop! Saving time!
