Our backyard is one of my very favorite things about our new house. My son uses his toy mower, edger and blower to “work on the yard” multiple times every day. Our daughter loves to run around and go down the slide my hubby’s gramma bought them and they both gets tons of enjoyment out of our little kiddee pool. Needless to say, the kids are in the yard a lot.
With Sister turning two this week and Brother being in one of his 3-year-old moods, we’ve had quite the noisy and dramatic week. Yesterday, I turned around to see my son dressed in a sweater vest, pajama pants and boots. He had been watching the rain fall out the window and then disappeared to his room to put on the outfit. “Mama, I want to go out in the rain and get all wet!” he said. My daughter started jumping up and down squealing with agreement “rain!” “all wet!”.
It had been one of those days, a long, weary, tantrum-filled day and I decided they were right. Every one just needed to run out some energy in the rain. So I opened the door and let them play. They splashed in the puddles, they dug in the mud and they went down the extra-fast wet slide. They giggled and played together in a way that they hadn’t all day. It was adorable. And MESSY.
How is it that the messiest times are always the most fun? Messes make wonderful memories and our day playing in the mud and rain was no exception! Just look at these boots and tell me the kids didn’t have the best afternoon ever!
It’s not just rainy days either! Since getting our house with a yard I’ve been amazed at the way my children can be outside for mere seconds and they will return to our home covered in dirt. Mud, sand, grass whatever it may be it coats the kiddos from head to toe. Our house doesn’t have the most lovely carpet in the world, but I do try to get them cleaned off as much as possible on the tiny bit of tile that is in front of our back door before letting them have free reign of the home once again.
Because of this there are two things I always keep right at our backdoor. (1) dryer sheets to tuck in their pockets before they go out to prevent mosquitos from carrying them away and (2) Wet Nap (Grab a coupon here) I found the latter in the napkin isle of Wal-mart and was pleasantly surprised at how thick and strong they are. They’re also made with aloe which means they don’t dry out my kiddos’ skin. I bought this citrus-y smelling ones last time which has been really nice, when my kids come inside they don’t smell like sweaty-dirty kids, they smell like fruit. Definitely a parenting win!
I’m loving settling in to these little routines around our house. Even just saying those words “our house” gets me excited. This has actually happened, messes and all we are home. And loving every second of it!
