We all know, it takes a lot to get through the Summer. A lot of fun, a lot of patience, and a lot of…surprises!
I’m working through the Summer this year, and the kids are not exactly thrilled that I’m not playing with them all day every day. So every once in awhile I like to surprise them with something amazing. This week…it was a surprise road trip!
Thankfully BabbleBoxx sent me everything we needed for car entertainment AND snacks. We went with Tree Top apple sauce pouches because they are so easy to travel with! The lids come on and off so when some one doesn’t finish it doesn’t spill all over the car. You can also just toss them in a back pack to take with you on adventures in the middle of the road trip!
We started our Texas road trip by going to get breakfast tacos. We had to keep our energy up for the trip ahead. The kids actually thought breakfast was the surprise for the day. They definitely weren’t expecting to meet friends there and then continue on to ANOTHER top secret location!
While they waited to find out where we were going on our surprise road trip, the kids had TONS of fun reading their ABC Texas book and coloring in the Texas coloring book. There are so many neat places to see in Texas, we’ve yet to road trip them all!
This time, we drove all the way to Galveston Island… our car stopped at the gulf where Bolivar Ferry waited to take us across to another island! Bolivar Ferry is fun and FREE. You can drive on the ferry or walk on. The line was long to drive on when we got there, so we parked our car and were able to walk on the very first boat that came along.
It was on the ferry that our Tree Top applesauce pouches came in handy a second time. They are easily packable so I was able to pull them out of my bag and the kids at them on the boat. It was a sunny, hot Texas day so I was glad to have something so easy on hand for them to enjoy.

The ferry ride is almost 15 minutes long, one way. On the other side is a lighthouse, a small beach town, and of course more beach! We had fun walking along the beach and finding all sorts of beautiful shells. Since the beaches on this island aren’t visited as much, we were able to find more whole shells than we have on other trips to Galveston.
We even came across several live hermit crabs. The kids were thrilled to see them crawling around, and of course had to pick up a few! When you’re done exploring the island, simply take the next ferry back.
There are several ferries that run during the day, so you never have to wait long. Even in the middle of the night they keep one running.
One of the biggest highlights of our trip was seeing DOLPHINS on both ferry rides. They often follow the ships so some one told us to be on the lookout for them. This was the kids first time seeing them so they were thrilled.
At one point we even saw a baby dolphin jump almost completely out of the water. Sadly, I didn’t snap a photo quick enough of that one!
It took up an entire day of Summer, but it was wonderful getting to experience the road and the sea with the kids all on one, epic Texas road trip!
