How Much Money Do Bloggers REALLY Make? Part2

I often get asked the question “How much money can be made through blogging?”. I wanted to be able to help out the people who have been asking me about it, which is why I wrote this post!  A few days ago I created an anonymous form and asked bloggers to share how much money they make blogging! I was amazed at how quickly people responded, and I’m thrilled that I can already share the information with you!

There are definitely a lot of different factors to consider when starting a blog, so I hope that this post helps you figure out if blogging is the right “work at home” option for you.

How Much Money Do Bloggers Make? This is great info! 11 different bloggers share how they make money, and how much they make a month!

*Many of the links in this post that are to different earning platforms are affiliate links, meaning I may receive a small compensation if you choose to sign up for the programs through my links. Thank you!*

Let’s get started!

  • What are the top 3 ways you earn? Social Fabric, Blueprint Social, Product Reviews

  • Any Advice for those hoping to start earning money blogging? Cut back on doing product reviews without monetary compensation unless you really love the product. This is not a “stepping stone”, as some would think, but rather a potential waste of your time and resources. The best way to get “hired” to do paid posts is to have regular and varied content, write in a professional way grammatically, but in a chatty/friendly way for your actual content. Brands want to see that you are engaged with your readers and that there is a relationship there. If you sound like a commercial then you’re not likely to engage very many readers.

  1. I found this really interesting to read. Thanks for putting this together Paula and thanks to everyone who shared. :-)

  2. I found this really interesting to see that you didn’t need that many page views in order to earn a reasonable amount.

    • I thought the same thing! Very interesting! :)

      • What??? The highest paid blogger makes $650 for a minimum of 160 hours work a month … that’s less than $5 an hour and I doubt that amount is net of taxes. Unless you LOVE LOVE LOVE every moment of the blogging your time would be better spent doing something else, anything else! Not trying to be rude … just realistic. Obviously, I’m not a blogger, tee hee.

  3. Hi Paula, thanks so much for posting this, and thanks to all who participated. I’m a newbie blogger who is stumbling along learning as I go. Monetizing is something I hope to do someday so it’s great to hear from those who are making it happen. Your posts about blogging have been such a huge help to me. Many thanks! :)

  4. I’ve been casually blogging since 2009 and seriously blogging since early 2012. I’ve gotten a lot more pageviews and traffic since I started seriously blogging, but my stats just aren’t growing as much as I’d like. I’ve done giveaways, pinnable posts, etc. to bring in traffic and, while my stats are slowly growing, it’s a very slow growth. Any tips to grow your blog audience?

    • My best tips would be to just keep at it! Pay attention to what posts your audience seems to enjoy most, and try to create more posts like that. Quality content is always key! Do you participate in any link parties? You can see a huge list of the ones I participate in by using the link in my menu at the top. That could help get your blog out there a bit more! it’s a great tool for meeting new bloggers! social media is another way to get your blog name out there! You can find more blog tips from my blog here: http://www.beautythroughimperfection.com/category/blogging-tips/ or feel free to email me if you have more specific questions, I’d love to help you!!!

  5. I only make money from my sponsors advertising…:-( Thank you for sharing at the Thursday Favorite Things Blog Hop xo

  6. Interesting read but I’m not sure I believe all of this. To have been blogging for only 6 weeks (#2) and already be making $500/month and have 45,000 page views to me seems a bit inflated. I belong to a few blogging groups and I can tell you that’s not typical. I have been blogging for a year and a half now and it took me about 5 months to get to 45,000 page views and that was with a huge Facebook following behind me. I agree once you gain momentum your blog should start to grow fast but if your focus isn’t on quality, you will lose sponsors AND readers faster than you can blink an eye.

    • #2 is not claiming to have been blogging for only 6 weeks, that would be truly incredible numbers! lol The question asked bloggers how long they had been making money with their blog, so I would assume her blog was already set up with a huge following before she/he decided to start monetizing it. That is what I did with mine as well, so I can speak from experience that it’s possible. The survey was done anonymously, so I see no reason why any one would lie about numbers, as they would gain nothing from saying their numbers were larger or smaller than the truly are, though I can’t guarantee it. ;)
I agree that the focus should be on quality, that is definitely number 1! This post is not meaning to dispute that, just to provide some numbers for people who are curious about how much can actually be made blogging, and provide information for any one hoping to star monetizing their blog.

  7. thanks for the helpful insights, I have been slowly gaining momentum since blogging after the tornado in Moore Ok, but yet with such a special niche where I am, I know there will be more views per month anyhow. It is a slow step too, since I have been doing it ever since may, but changes may need to be made too…

  8. Thank you for this article! It’s nice to see the reality of it. I don’t really look to make money on my blog yet, but when I have sold an ad it’s been a plus. Btw, I found you on Katherine’s Corner Blog Hop.

    • Thanks for stopping by :) It’s definitely a plus when you can earn a bit! I’ve found it interesting reading every one’s responses!

  9. Wow! As a new blogger, this information is invaluable. Thanks for sharing.

  10. Hi Paula
This is very informative. I’m just blogging because I like it so I don’t worry if it makes money at this time. But this is great information to have for future should I ever consider as an avenue of income. Thanks for sharing with us at our Thursday Favorite Things Blog Hop. Great to have you party with us.

    Angel @ Sewcraftyangel.blogspot.com

  11. This was so interesting. I still haven’t really figured out the ‘how to make money’ from my blog yet. I’ve done a few sponsored posts, but that’s about it. Thanks for sharing this with SYC.
    hugs,
    Jann

  13. Thanks for this post. I am really new to all of this. I am finding it a little overwhelming but a lot of fun. I’m learning everyday but this inspires me to stick with it!

  14. Thanks, for this. I’m trying to earn money also. Linda Crafts a la Mode

  15. Thanks for sharing. Its nice to see how many page views go along with earnings. I’m just getting started – this helps me stay motivated.

  16. Wow, this is really interesting, on a subject I find to be almost taboo. (Asking how much money people make on blogs.) Although maybe I’m just in the wrong circles… some of those new bloggers with huge followings already are incredible!

    • It definitely feels taboo doesn’t it, but at the same time, you want to ask so that you can know what to expect and if it’s worth it! (that’s how I feel anyway) That’s why I did this anonymously, so that people would be willing to share and we could all learn from each other! :)

  17. Anonymous says:

I prefer to stay anonymous but I have to say it depends on your niche. Here are my answers:

How long have you been making money blogging? 2 years
How much do you make in a typical month? $6500 (best month ever $10,000)
How many hours a week do you blog? 40
What are the top 3 ways you earn? affiliate links, adsense
What are your average monthly page views? 300,000
Any Advice for those hoping to start earning money blogging? Don’t blog to make money. Blog because you are passionate. Don’t post something because you’ll get paid for it. Post it because it’s truthful, valid, and important to you.

    • I enjoyed your comments. The passion is what drives everything. It is almost like the saying that says: if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life. I am curious as to how long it took before you made any money?

      Thanks,

      Bryan Johnson

  18. Great article – so interesting to see the variation in what people earn -the constant seems to be in the hours people spend – 20-40 seems to be the norm!

  19. This IS interesting, Paula. There is such a wide range in all of the answers, isn’t there!? To all the bloggers who participated (if you’re reading the comments on this post): thank you!!

  20. Yes! Thank you for sharing this. I’ve been putting off monetizing forever and this really makes me want to kick my butt in to high gear!

  21. I’m always fascinated by how much the income varies among bloggers who have similar traffic as it depends so much on how they monetize and on their niche. I wish more people would talk specifics so that we could all learn from each other.
I have been blogging for many years for friends and family, switched two years ago to a public blog but only started to try to make money with it this January. I have been growing my income with it every month since February and am on pace to have my first $1,000 month this month. It has meant a lot of learning, a lot of hours and a lot of hard work. I have had to put in 40-50 hours a week.
I appreciate you starting this discussion and find the differences in numbers very interesting.

  22. This was really interesting. I am pretty surprised to see so many “newish” bloggers making decent money on blogging!!

  23. This is very interesting. I used to make money blogging but I took a long hiatus. I guess I started blogging because people were asking me all sorts of questions and I thought I could get all my advice out there better through the written word. Also since I wanted to be a writer and was frustrated with submissions and had so many ideas I thought, “it’d be nice to just publish whatever I want, whenever I want”…now I am no longer afraid to charge for my experience and advise so I use blogging to advertise my services, as well as share things I still have no need to charge for or just to publish things I’d like to have published that I think people will be interested in or find useful.

I would like to start making money blogging again though, at the very least to pay off the fees for hosting websites. From my experience it took about 2 months when I first started my blogs to get good traffic, community and people to want to pay you, so I have about another month left on my new blog to get things in a steady flux.

    Found you on sharefest, btw.

  24. Wow! At least most of the bloggers have good stats despite some low earnings. Stats are definitely where a blogger hoping to make money should focus!

  25. This was really interesting to see! Thanks for sharing.

  26. Thank you very much for this post! I’m a new blogger so this information is so helpful! Thanks for all those who shared their information too! : )

  27. This is a great post and it is very honest. It certainly puts things in perspective for not only new bloggers but veteran bloggers too. Thanks for the valuable information.

  28. I really enjoyed this article. I like to see the advice that other bloggers have to give it is very helpful! Thanks for gathering this information for us!

  29. Very eye-opening. What a great idea you’ve had here, Paula. Thanks so much for sharing, and for all the wonderful blog-growing tips! Happy Monday to you!

  30. Thanks so much for sharing this information…I kind of thought bloggers would be hush hush on their earnings. The one question I wish you would have asked each blogger was how long they had been blogging before monetizing. As a new blogger, I am enjoying building my blog, but I am curious to know how long it took them. I’m off to explore your other posts about blogging!

    • I chose not to ask that question since I know lots of bloggers didn’t even intent to start monetizing when they began blogging. I started way back before you could even blog for a career, so that wasn’t even in my mind then! ;)

  31. Very interesting post and great information to have! Thanks for sharing this!

  32. Very interesting post. I’m gonna tweet and pin this one!! Have a lovely day.

  33. Wow…so much good information here. I’m bookmarking it to come back and read it again. Thank you for all the time it took to compile this.

  34. Very very interesting!

  35. I loved this post. Thank you so much! I am trying to build my readership. I am sponsoring a giveaway over on my blog! Go check it out!

  37. I really think this is important information for new bloggers. I really appreciate the bloggers who are willing to share their information.

  38. I will be non-anonymous and share my answers. You can also gain exposure through LifestyleCarnival.com which hosts a rotating link party each week.

How long have you been making money blogging? Since Feb 2011
How much do you make in a typical month? $800, best month $1500
How many hours a week do you blog? 10, typically I post one to two times a month. I should probably post more.
What are the top 3 ways you earn? affiliate links, adsense, private ads
What are your average monthly page views? 10,000
Any Advice for those hoping to start earning money blogging? Make connections! A lot of what I learned was through networking with those who have done it before me.

    • Wow. What’s your website? I’m confused whether I like writing or not lol. Pondering whether it’s for me or not. I wrote in my diary alot to get emotions out when I was in grade school, but that’s about it. I’m pretty poetic though :)

  39. Check this out. dollarsandroses.com This is a husband and wife’s joint blog. She also has her own blog and he has his own blog. They make quite a bit. They both blog about totally different things.

  40. Hi Paula,

Thank you for sharing for sharing this insight on how much money bloggers make. I will admit that its quite motivational. I think that the mistake most bloggers make is not taking it as serious as it should be. For instance, they will treat it as a hobby and not a business. Like any business you have to dedicate a lot of time and effort in the beginning but if you enjoy doing it then it wont seem like a chore. Blogging is not a get rich quick scheme, so its important to recognize that you won’t make money right away unless you planned it out before hand and have tons of money to invest. My advice is if you enjoy it then go for and then simply enjoy the ride.

    Thanks again for sharing.

  41. What a great and informative post. Thank you so much for sharing. I have been looking for this sort of information. I am still learning everything I can. I started out with no knowledge of blogging, wordpress, or programming and I have learned a great deal in the past month and a half from bloggers/ blogs like you.

  42. I agree with all of the above. This was so intriguing. I blog to have an “out” in life, to have some “me” moments, to offset being a stay at home mom. However, if I could earn an income to at least cover my costs, and make a fee extra dollars, I would be thrilled! I’d love to be able to tell my husband that I am contributing financially! :)

  43. WOW very interesting post. Funny I have never even thought about making money from my blog with anything other than Adsense and that was just because I kept seeing it on blogger. I have not found it to really do that much but I participate anyway. Nice to know some folks make money. Pretty cool! Hugs, Beverly

  44. Thank you for the info! Truly motivates me to continue blogging!

    cheers,

  45. This is definitely really interesting to read. I make around $10K a month blogging, and I pour my heart and soul into it!

  46. This is really interesting, thanks for collecting the stats and presenting the info. The only additional information I would like to see is how long everyone has been blogging. Everyone says that it takes a lot of time to start earning money but I wonder how much time exactly?
    Stopping by from Wonderful Wednesday!

  47. That’s really interesting Paula. Being about to retire I’m looking to do some blogging. But, first I need to learn about it. You’ve given me a kick start

  50. This post is really inspiring. Earning thru blogging can happen in a matter of months but sometimes it’ll take years. So it pays to have a little patience :)

  52. Very helpful! Thank you! Will print this out and keep as a reference.

  53. I was trying to work out if it would be worth my while setting up a blog.
Thanks Paula for a very honest and useful article.
It looks like those who make money from it put in plenty of honest hard work.

  54. dear paula

  55. Great read! Some may not be making alot of money but its still inspirational! I love writing for my music magazine site and Im not in it for the money but I do need to get those bills paid!…lol

  56. Hi Paula ,

Currently I am only using ad-sense, Can you please explain me with steps how I can earn more and more from blogging.

    Thanks

  57. Great post and content.. Just found your site the other day been looking for other bloggers.

One thing I’ve done to make money online is to use a method called ‘Other Peoples Lists..

Basically what you do is to reach out to other bloggers, ask if you can run a solo ad in their newsletter promoting yourself or your product…

Of course product, content etc. has to be similar but that way you not only get people signed up to your list you can follow up on, you might also get a few sales through which cover the expensive you spend on buying the solo ad..

    Again keep it up.. :)

  58. Hi,
    Thanks for sharing this :)
I believe that the golden rule is the one that one of the participants mentioned : ” build your community and drive traffic first”. He / she is 100% right !

  59. I have found the main way to make money with your blog is to love what you are writing about. Your blog also has to stand out from other blogs that are about the same subject matter. It can take anywhere from 3 months to a year for Google to send increasing numbers of visitors to your blog so think about what you are writing about as a long term article. I have been blogging and getting paid to blog for over 7 years now. Learned a lot and since the internet keeps changing ……I am still learning.

  60. please send me information to hiw to work on blogspot

  61. I used to blog every day for a couple of months and made over $100 a month, but eventually let the blog slide. I am more determined to focus this time though, especially after reading this article. It proves that you don’t have to be in the game that long in order to make a decent amount of money and that you really can make money from something you enjoy.

  62. I have been blogging for 2 years. One of my blog have average page view 150,000 per month. My highest ear per month only $ 230.

  63. Great post – very inspiring! I agree however, that getting stats up is way more important for the long run. In fact, monetizing should not even be considered until a blog hits the 10-15k monthly mark (in my opinion). Great post!

  64. Great post! Very informative. It’s interesting the parallel between number of visitors and earnings per month. For some more ideas pop over to my blog :)

  65. How long have you been making money blogging? 4 Years 4 months
How much do you make in a typical month? Old blog got over $200/month before it went down.
How many hours a week do you blog? 10 hours
What are the top 3 ways you earn? Amazon Affiliates
What are your average monthly page views? At peak it used to be over 50,000/month
Any advice for those hoping to start earning money blogging? – It takes time but if you are passionate about writing then keep at it and build up a name for yourself by constantly producing the best possible content you can possibly provide. You’ll get noticed eventually and the mighty Google will start sending thousands of visitors your way!

  66. Hi im ssakiynaa and I recently started up a blog at thoughts.Com ive been writing since I was 8 but didnt start blogging till last month I love to write about any and everything especially about my life experiences, I wanna be a paid blogger but I have no idea on how to go about that can anybody email me to help ke get started this os actually one of my dreams om just a young girl who wants to tell her story my e-mail is [email protected]

  67. Thanks so much for this post. I’m just starting out and really had no idea what to expect. I’m probably not going to earn money blogging, but I sure am learning a lot about computer skills. I’m not technical at all, so I’m teaching myself how to do more then just use email or Facebook. It’s a lot harder then I thought it would be, but I’m excited about all the knowledge I’m gaining. Thanks again!

  68. I make a few bucks blogging along using adsense and affiliate sites or ptcs. Theres a bunch of ways but blogging can open up new opportunities if you know a thing or two about search engine optimization.

  69. Hello everyone come check out my blog I was encouraged by this awesome blogger to start my own ive been writing for a while and this blog her gave me the confidence to begin a new path thanks Your awesome Paula

  70. This is really interesting. Wish I could sit down face-to-face with some really successful bloggers and learn from them.

  71. Hello, the whole thing is going fine here and ofcourse every one is sharing data, that’s really good, keep up writing.

  72. Thank you fot this great insight. Earnings of Blogger 1 are really impressive. I thought there is alot of hard work behind his success

  73. You guys present there are performing an excellent job.

  74. Really nice

  75. There is definately a great deal to find out about this topic.
I love all the points you made.

  76. Definitely a great post.

If you’re in an industry like nursing, it’s easy to know what a general going rate would be for your work. In blogging and freelance online work – it is SO difficult to know what to charge, what your worth is, what to expect, etc.

I love that there is more discussion these days about how to make your blog a business!

I’m actually speaking at Go Blog Social about how to blog full time, and then at Mom 2.0 in May on a panel with similar themes. I love seeing women be able to earn an income on their own, with little initial investment, and have a way to have a more flexible lifestyle. And it’s super interesting to read this, and see how incredibly varied the different bloggers earnings and time investment are.

  77. I wish I had two more pieces of information 1) their niche, is it competitive or is it more open? and 2) their Klout or Kred score to give me an idea of how much social share they have. That in combination with their page views would give a better picture and a clue to why some are making so much so quickly and others a lot later. I also wonder how you would fit me into the equation. I make very little from my blog directly a bit of Amazon Affiliate stuff and Google Ads, but I make quite a bit of money as a brand ambassador which is definitely an outgrowth of my blog.

    Cheers,

    Lisa

    • If you are making money as a brand ambassador on our through your blog it would have been included in the blog earnings here. :)

Niche and klout are definitely good questions! I may include them if I do more in the future!

  78. Thanks for posting this! I just started a new blog/website and now I have a better idea of what to expect as well as where to start.

  79. I have been blogging for only a few weeks and learn more every day. Thanks for posting this I enjoy seeing what others are doing on their blogs and what kind of results they are getting.

  80. I have come across you articles by way of Pinterest. Thank you for all of the amazing advice on blogging! After blogging on and off for years, I’ve decided to take it seriously since I love it so much. Thanks again for the advice. I’m following you on Pinterest now as well. :)

  81. I love seeing real stats on bloggers income and how long it took them to get there. The transparency helps avoid all the “get rich quick” ideas. I’d be curious to know the general niche each of these blogs are in. That makes a huge difference.

  82. wow this is very helpful, i just started my blog for less than a month and i’ve been wondering about the same thing! Thanks for helping us newbies out Paula! :D

  85. Very interesting read. Every blogger seems to have their own tactics and methods. I’ve written online before but this is the first time I’ve had my own domain, website, and so on. I’m interested to see what the best traffic avenues are going to be.

  86. Thanks for the wonderful article Paula. I’ve been blogging since quite sometime now and I love every minute of it! For beginners who want to get into the wonderful world of blogging, I would suggest 2 things:
    1. Start Small
Find out if your fav blogs accept articles and start by blogging for them. It helps you develop your writing skills, start developing a writing schedule and most important – to guage if you love doing it.
    2. Have Loads of Patience
Blogs take time so give them time. Loads of it. Pushing them too soon puts undue pressure on you and might make you feel stressed out.
    All the best.

  7. […] Recently a lady did a blog survey on her blog asking bloggers how much money they made. There was a surprising number of anonymous responses, believable as a group chiefly due to their uncoordinated general attestation to the truth that blogging doesn’t make you much money.  People with views in the range of 10,000 – 50,000 per month were making between $100-$500, people getting less views than that were making less than $50/month.  This conforms with my personal experience also.  For young kids, that may be a decent chunk of money, but for people like me, it doesn’t make much sense to spend the time one needs to spend.  From the survey, in order to attract ~10,000 views or more per month, they were spending up to 30hrs per week to bring in this small amount of income.  Clearly making money is a lame excuse to be blogging for most people.  Of course there are some people born to blog or exhibit themselves, and they easily bring in millions of views per posting without much effort – the power of personality or physical attractiveness pays dividends for such people.
