I’m regularly asked how I get my hair so blue. And by regularly, let’s just say it happens anytime I go out in public. Generally, when people ask questions, there is a large number of people wondering the same thing but too timid to ask.
I figured I’d just throw together a blog post to show you what we use in case you or some one you know is wanting to go super bright with their hair. I’m using affiliate links to the products we use.
First step is always bleaching. My hair is naturally very dark brown, so there’s no way we could get it the bright blue that I want it without a round or two of bleaching first.
The first time we did it we had to bleach it twice. We waited a couple days (maybe a week?) in between bleaching so we didn’t fry my hair.
Since that time, we’ve been able to do everything with just one round of bleaching.
We use this bleach. It’s the only one I’ve ever used so I can’t compare it with others, but it smells like blueberry muffins, which is nice.
We always do the dying right after we’re done bleaching. You can see my hair doesn’t get completely white, but we get it yellow enough. If you are a natural blonde or have lighter brown hair you might be able to skip the bleaching step.
Then, we dye the blue, it ends up looking like this…

This is at the Lego American Roadshow…
This blue is called atomic turquoise and is manic panic brand.
We’ve tried other brands but this one has given us the brightest color and stayed in the longest as well.
After putting the blue dye all in my hair, I’ll leave it on for 2-4 hours to let it really soak in and give me the longest color. After that we rinse it out.
Eventually, it does start to fade. The picture below was taken about 2 and a half months after dying it.

And this one was after four months. The bleach starts to show through a bit more, and the turquoise ends up looking more green. I still like the affect, but if you want all blue all the time, you’d need to dye it more regularly.

The second day after dyeing is always better than the first day. This is a silly selfie I sent my godmother the day after she did it last time so she could see how it looked.

So there you have it!
Manic panic has a lot of bright and wonderful colors to choose from, so if blue isn’t your favorite you can snag pink, purple or something else just as fun!
Would you ever dye your hair a “crazy” color? Tell me about it in the comments!
