Do you ever have trouble getting your little ones to brush their teeth? From getting them to actually want to brush their teeth, to teaching them to do it long enough or correctly; tooth brushing can be quite the challenge when there are toddlers involved! Here are our 4 best tips for tooth brushing tots!
- Do it together – The kids and I have started brushing our teeth together in the mornings, and it really helps every one remember to do it! They love climbing up on their stools next to me and we all share one sink! It can get a little bit crazy, but leading by example is always a good thing when it comes to our kids, especially in regards to health!
- Take turns – My son is three, so he of course wants to do everything on his own. While I appreciate that enthusiasm, he is not quite as thorough as I would like for him to be. To compromise, we take turns! I let him choose if he wants the first turn or the last, and I take the other. He switches back and forth between what he prefers, but either way I get in some thorough brushing to his teeth and he’s slowly learning to do a better job of it himself.
- Sing/hum a song – Every now and then we have trouble with my little guy not wanting to brush his teeth for long enough. If I let him he’d just suck the toothpaste straight of the brush and say he was done. To keep this from happening we can choose a song to sing and hum while he brushes. He has to brush until we reach the end of the song. This works better for us than a timer, since he can gauge how much time he has left more easily in song than he can with number of minutes or seconds. Not to mention songs make everything more fun!
- Characters – My son fights me on a lot of things, but Thomas the train and Elmo can convince him to do just about anything! Having the characters on the toothpaste really do make a difference! I was surprised by how thrilled my little boy was the he saw Thomas and Elmo smiling up at him from the toothpaste containers! Now the big decision every day is which kind to use

Thanks for this! You are a mind-reader. I was just thinking about how this should be a blog post somewhere. :) Even though my baby girl is only 15 months, we are now brushing her teeth trying to make it part of our routine. I’ll be sure to remember these tips!
