One of the hardest parts of motherhood is the distinct lack of sleep. It seems, from the moment a mom becomes pregnant sleep becomes completely elusive. Getting up in the night to go to the bathroom turns into staying up all night with a fussing baby.
While that first little while with a baby there’s nothing to do but wake up and feed them when they need it, after awhile it becomes clear that they could make it through the night without a feeding and they are just used to waking up. Your pediatrician can help you figure out when this time is for your baby, but if you are there with your baby OR even a toddler who can’t quite make it through the night either, try these tips!
Feed before bed – You definitely want your kiddo going to sleep on a full stomach. If that means a small snack for your toddler before they scoot off to sleep, let them have one! For a baby, you might consider waking him before you go to bed to give them one more bottle or breastfeeding session. This will ensure that you get a few more precious hours of uninterrupted sleep before baby wakes up needing more.
Wake them up – This is such a CRAZY tip, but when I was desperate to get my 2 year old sleeping through the night again, I went ahead and tried it. It worked for us and you can get all the details on how to do it just right from my friend here.
Keep them dry – Keeping them dry through the night is one of the most important pieces to helping kids sleep through the night! You can get Huggies® Snug & Dry Ultra Diapers at Walmart.com (they have sizes from infant to toddler)! I love that you can order them online so you don’t even have to run out to the store. I always keep a few tucked in my purse throughout the day too, because you NEVER know when you’ll need an extra! Aren’t they the cutest? My daughter loves the Mickey & Minnie pattern!
Most importantly the unique quilted liner locks away wetness better, it can keep your baby DRY for up to 12 hours. Can you imagine 12 straight hours of sleeping? It’s a dream!!!
Wait it out – I learned with my first that if I waited through the first few sniffles, sometimes baby would calm down himself. Instead of sprinting to the crib at the first rustling from my baby, I’d wait and see if he was really going to wake up. Patience can go a long way!
Night light – A calm soothing night light can also help baby sleep better. That way when she wakes up she won’t be completely in the dark and get scared. We chose one with a soft glow that still lit up the room enough so that when she wakes up, she can see where she is and settle back to sleep.
Leave them in bed – When my toddlers have trouble sleeping, I make a point not to lift them out of bed. That way they know it’s not cuddle time, and I will get them drinks or anything they need but they aren’t going to get anything special. (Obvious exception is made here, if the child is scared.)
What are your best tips for getting a baby to sleep through the night? Which of these will you try first?

Sleep through the night – that was the night I was waiting for! For sooo looong! My son was a terrible sleeper and a cat napper and I had no idea what to do about it besides of Ferbers sleep training. And was not interested in this one! Luckily my friend gave me the book the used before (How to teach a baby how to sleep alone from parental-love.com). I cannot tell it worked immediately like my friend said, it was almost a week of a struggle. But it worked! It was gentle, nothing like Ferbers, and it just worked! Oh my life was so simple again!
