We don’t do a lot of screen-time in our house, but I’ve been wanting to try out a little something for the kids. They are getting older and starting to enjoy little games and puzzles.
As soon as I pulled the Amazon fire out of the box they were smitten. Thankfully, it only took a few minutes to set up! I had no idea what to expect, but I was happy to see a battery that was already at 70% charge and after entering my email address a setting up wifi and a tiny bit of personalizations, my kids could jump right in!
With the freetime unlimited membership there are 5,000 games, books, apps, videos and more that my kids have access to. I was able to enter in their ages so that the apps on the tablet stay in their age range. From Dora to Elmo to Super Why the kids are LOVING the educational games.
I’m loving the bit of “free time” I get as I let them play with it for a little bit at a time.
There are timer settings available only from the “adult” section of the tablet, so you can limit the time each kiddo spends on their games. While I just keep ours out of reach, I can see that really coming in handy if you have older kids.
I was also really happy that the kids section of the tablet is locked down. They can’t get on the internet (even though the tablet is connected to wifi) and there are no “in-app” purchases to worry about. All the purchasing and internet browsing is password protected! There’s enough to keep them entertained without all that, but I love that I can let them use the tablet, worry free! I don’t have to double check every few minutes that they aren’t clicking ads, surfing the web or unintentionally making purchases!
Don’t tell the kids, but I love it for me too! The “adult” profile on the tablet makes it easy for me to surf the internet, read kindle books and even get on social media! The Kids Edition features a quad-core processor, a vivid HD display, front- and rear-facing cameras and Dolby Digital audio. It’s for kids, but mom and dad can have a lot of fun with it too!
One of the most amazing things is the warranty. My kids are brutal with their toys. As many times as I say “be careful” accidents happen, especially when little ones are involved! Which is why I’m amazed that Amazon is offering a 2-year worry-free guarantee. That means if anything happens, send the device back and they’ll replace it for free – no questions asked. Definitely a must for a kids tablet!
The Kids Edition tablet also comes with a durable, lightweight kid-proof case available in green, blue or pink to protect against drops and bumps.
The Fire HD Kids Edition is $149 for a 6″ tablet and $189 for a 7″ (grab yours here).
I’m thinking this would make a fantastic Christmas gift! For both you and your kids!

Hi Paula! This is a very nice review and I agree entirely. We’ve been using it for about 6 months now. We once made the mistake of handing over the kindle without making sure it was in free time. So the kids were in adult world and easily purchased and downloaded the movie: Tangled. Amazon is pretty understanding and gave us a refund. But now, we’re extra careful to make sure we launch free time before we hand it over and make sure purchases are password protected. I’m glad you got a case for yours. Ours is pretty banged up!
