We’ve almost reached the end of the first week back to school, and so far, so good. We’ve found a lot of ways to make the transition easier with our son, which should help as our daughter goes back next week (Preschool here starts a week later than elementary).
Our top tips for surviving back to school (both from things we’ve done right and things we’ve learned by messing it up week 1)

Have a plan for the pickup line – I was quietly hoping that the whole “drop off and pick up line thing” everyone complains about really wouldn’t be as bad as all the hype. Except it’s actually still pretty bad. That’s ok, next week we’ll go in prepared with some fun audiobooks to keep the three year old (and me) entertained while we wait.
Homework – So far, we’ve only had one little project, plus signing of the behavior folder each day. We do this the minute we come home. Otherwise, I know there’s exactly a 0% chance I’d remember to sign or check with him that he didn’t have any projects or homework to do. Make a schedule so everyone knows what to expect and stick to it!

Lunch – Set the bar low the first week. I messed up the first week of preschool last year, and bought special treats for their lunches. Then the kids started expecting it and I was kinda stuck. This year, we set the bar low, and haven’t had a single complaint thus far. I’m sure I’ll throw the occasional treat it from time to time but it’s nice that they are expecting what will be in their lunches each day, instead of something extra.
Pay it forward – Even in a tight-budget season like this, you can give charitably using the PayPal app and their PayPal Giving Fund!
