Now that most schools from preschool to high school are back in session it’s time for the last group to prepare to return… It won’t be much longer and college students will be starting classes once again!
I know for my kids, there are several things I want to teach them before I send them off to college.
Near the very top of the list is how to shop! It seems like such a simple thing, but it’s a big deal if kids don’t know how to do it effectively.
Simple things like, going to the store as little as possible (because you will always pick up one or two things you hadn’t planned to buy), and never shopping hungry will certainly get them started on the right foot.
I also want to do a few trial shopping trips with them. Teaching them how to budget for what they need and how to be a frugal shopper.
It’s always helpful if you can get everything in one spot. I love that Walmart has everything they need from Schick® disposable razors to food to entertainment! Looking for coupons and affordable prices always helps too.
Even though my kids are little right now, we love a lot of college students and so I’m keeping in the back of my mind ways that I can help my kids when it’s time for them to take that journey.
When shopping, I always try to point out good deals and explain why we are purchasing certain things, and passing on others. Even when looking to save, you can’t sacrifice quality. I want to be sure my kids know about good brands where they will get the best value for their dollar. When buying disposable razors from Schick® (my favorite is the Schick® Hydro Silk® Razor) I know that they will be getting a great product that will cut their hair but not their skin. It will keep them looking their best, even in the midst of those sleepless college nights!
As they head off, I want to be sure they know how to cook a few basic meals, do laundry for themselves, and make the best decisions with the money they have to spend. That starts when they are little, and will last until they leave the nest!
In addition to the practical, most of all I want my kids to know that they are loved. That I will support them as they move into this stage of adulthood and learn, grow and make mistakes all on their own.
I can’t imagine how hard it will be, letting go, and letting them start to make their own decisions but it will be amazing to watch it happen too!
What words of wisdom will you be passing on to your kids before they leave for College? Are you preparing for that now?
