Everyone always talks about Spring cleaning, but let’s be real for a minute. Fall cleaning is a way higher priority for me. I’ve just had my kids home all Summer long. They’ve done nothing but make messes for three whole months and now that they’re back at school I’m left re-assembling our house. Fall cleaning people. It’s essential!
Calendar years may start in January, but I think Fall is always a good ‘reset’ time because we start with a new school schedule and new activities for the kids! It makes sense to try to get the house back on track at the same time.
All Summer long the furniture has endured a lot. Kids coming in from outside all muddy, mom and dad coming in sweating, and let’s not talk about what those poor couches went through if you did any potty training this Summer. Pull out a bottle of Febreeze and set to work freshening up cushions and making your living room smell great again!
You an use the same Febreeze for the car. I don’t know why I had never thought of this before, but somehow our car has ended up smelling like old sippy cup and I’m just DONE. If you have cloth seats like we do, use the Febreeze to freshen them up. Then you can get some Febreeze car clips, to keep the wonderful smell around!
Let’s be real about the dining room floors next. I’m not saying we didn’t mop all Summer long. But I might be saying I can count on one hand the number of times we mopped. Okay, don’t judge. It’s kindof a pain to mop and requires the kids not running around through the house asking for snacks, so yeah, Summer mopping is always going to be near the bottom of the todo list. Now, we have a Swiffer Wet Jet which makes the whole mopping process a lot easier. No more buckets to fill with warm water and kids trying to spill them, and/or trying to carry them through the house to the one little corner of tile in the entryway… Swiffer Wet Jet has everything attached to it, so it’s easy to carry around your house where ever you need it, or even grab it after a meal and *gasp* start mopping more. Genius!
If you have wood floors (or plan to upgrade to wood this Fall…we’re hoping to change in our carpeting SOON!) you can also get a special wood floor cleaner from Swiffer that’s compatible with the Wet Jet!
Lastly, let the decorating begin! I’m not always the most creative decorator, but I have learned a few tricks through the years.
One of the most simple ways to bring some new flair to a room, is by strategically placing a new throw blanket over a chair or couch. Use bright colors for Spring and Summer, something Christmas-y for Winter, and lush earth tones for Fall!
It’s a little touch but it just might bring a smile to your face as you walk into the room!
Oftentimes, I’ll plan out my decorating ideas first, as incentive to clean up the house quickly while the kids are in school. Maybe it’s purchasing a new throw or rug at Target that I’m ecited to place. Or perhaps grabby craft supplies to make a new wreath for the door. Whatever it is, having a plan for decorating helps give me extra incentive to get cleaning done, and FAST.
Next, I’ve learned the hard way to make sure I have all the cleaning supplies I need BEFORE I even start. There’s nothing more frustrating than only being able to get a room HALF clean because you’re out of cleaning clothes or wet jet liquid.
Stock up on what you need and then have at it! Let the Fall cleaning time begin!
