Screen time is a struggle in most houses these days. We are surrounded by screens every moment of the day. Restaurants have TVs playing in the background, there are huge televisions in the living room, and we even all carry pocket-size screens with us everywhere we go.
It’s no wonder that our kids are wanting to constantly watch movies or play games online, we’ve literally surrounded them with opportunities to immerse themselves in all things digital.
While I do enjoy screen time myself, and I allow my kids to participate in games, movies and shows there are limits. Like all things it comes with a need for balance.
When the screens are too much, like many parents, I’ll enforce a no screen time rule until we can get it under control again.
I’ve noticed something about my son though… if I give him open-ended creative things to play with, he will often ask for the tv to be turned off or simply walk out in the middle of a movie so he can work on creating something.
This week I bought the 60 piece PBS KIDS Build It Kit by YOXO. The kids are having so much fun with it!
We’ve built fighter jets, cars, bicycles and robots…all in the last few days!
The first day they mimicked the ideas they saw put together on the box but now they’re busy creating their own inventions and figuring out how pieces go together.
This is the type of creative, hands on play that drives my kids away from screens without any fighting or tears!
It’s so fun watching them work out how pieces can go together to create their vision for a new invention. I’ve been amazed at how many things they can each make with 60 pieces in build it kit!
The materials used to build the YOXO toys themselves are made with recycled and recycle-able materials so this is a gift that helps the planet too!
YOXO is also compatible with things the kids can find around the house. Everything from cereal boxes to paper towel rolls and even building blocks that they play with every day! The possibilities are as endless as a child’s imagination!
This will make an amazing Christmas gift idea for kids! So many times kids get something for Christmas and never play with it after that first week. Since YOXO appeals to the creativity in a child, you know they will keep playing with it all year round and learning about how things work as they do.

These boxes are awesome! I’ve noticed that my 4 year old will sometimes ask to turn the tv off so she can go play (and no, we don’t have it on all the time. Lol) My answer is always a resounding yes to that question of course :)

Some parents try to limit how much time their kids spend on devices, and the reason is serious: too much screen time could lead to real health problems for your children. A recent study of 9- to 10-year-olds who spent more than three hours a day on devices are 18 percent more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes.
