Something you might not know about me is that I did a lot of dancing as a kid. I started around the age of six with one class a week and by the time I was 15 I was at the dance studio 5 days a week, up to 6 hours at a time some days.
I loved it. Wasn’t great at it, but I loved it. Tap was and will always be my favorite, but I did everything from Ballet, to Pointe, to Hip-Hop to Modern/Lyrical and even the occasional Swing dance lesson.
We ended up with more awkward photos like this than I care to share, and a whole lot of great memories.
Today I’m partnering with High Strung, a dance movie coming out April 8, 2016. I got a digital version to prescreen and it really took me back to my dance days!
Preteen-dancer-me would have been obsessed with this movie.
It follows Ruby, a Ballet student who has just moved to NYC on a scholarship to a dance school, and Johnnie, a brooding violin player in desperate need of a Visa lest he be deported back to the U.K.
There’s beautiful violin pieces amazing ballet dances, and even some hip hop thrown in by Johnnie’s neighbors.
Without giving away too much, I have to say that the last dance really stole my heart! It was ballet (pointe) and hip hop at the same time, all accompanied by a violin. Very hard to explain while still doing justice to it, but I loved it!

One thing I really appreciated about the movie is that it was safe for smaller dancers. There was minimal language (I only noticed a “h*ll yes!” once) and the overall movie was pretty clean. This is VERY different from most dance movies out there, so I appreciated their efforts to make it entertaining for older dancers but still clean enough for younger ones.
NYC “gang fights” were taken care of through epic dance battles that were fabulous to watch and what somehow brought Ruby and Johnnie together.
And of course a night out with the girls ends up in a dance competition in the bar as well.
All in all this was a fun movie and would be perfect for a dance sleepover when it comes out on DVD OR to take the whole dance team to see when it hits theaters April 8th! You can get your tickets here.
Did you do dance as a kid, or are you a dance mom? Will you be heading out to see this one? Let me know in the comments!
