At the end of every week it’s the same. We’re exhausted and my husband and I sigh to ourselves. “That crazy week is over, hopefully things will get back to normal next week.”
And then the next week rolls around and it ends up just as chaotic.
Somewhere along the line as the crazy weeks turned into crazy months, we realized maybe it’s just us. Maybe we’re just committed to a hectic kind of lifestyle.
In many ways, I’m okay with that realization. I love (LOVE) the things we do in life. We are able to spend a ton of time together as a family, and my husband and I both spend time working with organizations that mean a lot to us. It’s a wonderful sort of chaos, even if it is tiring. But, we’ve learned that in order to spend time doing the things we care about, we need to SIMPLIFY everything else.
My husband has cooking down to a science. It’s quick and easy for him now, and yep, we go out to eat at least once a week just to save a little time and sanity and spend more time together, where one of us isn’t in the kitchen.
Our house is a place that often has people in it, which means the cleaning up process has to be simplified, too. Whether you’re looking to free up some time to pursue more hobbies or volunteer opportunities, or simply looking for ways to spend more downtime with your family, these tips can help you simplify your life in subtle ways that will make a HUGE difference.
Forget about perfection
Yes, really. Your house will never be perfect, and I know for a fact mine won’t. It’s not a mess, but it’s also not spotless. If you come over, it will be obvious that we live here, and my kids play here, but hey, it will also be easier for your kids to join in the fun because we have an art table ready for coloring on in the living room, and the kids’ latest creations hanging all over the walls. As my friend, Jillian, always says, “Strive for B+ work, not A+ work.”
Take baby steps
Instead of scrubbing everything spotless in one day, we work on things little by little. When I have a spare two minutes, I’ll clean a few things up instead of waiting until I have a full day to get everything spotless (because that day will never come!). When the kids help, I get them to do 10-15 things at a time. It’s a good, measurable thing for them to do, and they love that they can sprint around and pick up 10 toys in a matter of seconds. It makes a HUGE difference, and complaints about cleanup time virtually disappear when they know there’s a finite amount of cleaning they have to do before they can do something fun.
Reduce!
Simplifying life also means simplifying the amount of tasks you have to do. I love finding ways that one item can pull double duty. My latest find is the Angel Soft® with Fresh Lavender-Scented Tube that I found on Walmart.com. A fresh lavender scent is added to the tube itself, which keeps our bathroom smelling fresh!
This is a MUST in my house now, because our “guest” bathroom is also the kids’ bathroom. Before I found this, I can’t tell you how many times someone has just dropped by our house and I’ve cringed inside wondering what it might smell like in there (because, kids). I don’t like the idea of a candle burning in a kid’s bathroom, but the new Angel Soft® with Fresh Lavender-Scented Tube does the trick for me! The bathroom smells GREAT and I just have to make sure the kids keep the bath toys IN the tub, and we’re ready for guests any day of the week!
How are you simplifying your life? I’d love to hear your best tips about how you’re making room in your life for the things that matter most to you!
