If you listen to the internet, apparently “date night” for married couples is a controversial topic. One camp says it’s essential, and you’re certainly on the fast-track to divorce if you don’t have a regular date night after saying “I do”. The other says it’s silly, daily time with your spouse is all you need, and dating is for, well, the “dating stage” only.
I don’t really fall into either of these camps. I won’t say date night is essential for a happy marriage, because I know there are lots of ways a couple can be happy. For some seasons of life date night isn’t even possible, and I don’t think that makes a marriage disaster bound.
However, I do love a good date night. Time spent with my husband is always time well spent, and I’ll snatch up those extra minutes any time I can.
During the Summer months, it’s especially fun! I hate cold weather so when cooler weather hits, we’re limited to indoor dates only. I love that Summer allows us to have fun outside together, even if it does get hot.
I realize that school is starting quickly, but I live in Houston, it’s still well over 100 degrees outside every. single. day. So, it still feels a lot like Summer here in Texas, so I thought it would be fun to recap some of our favorite dates and some we’ve yet to try but still might make time for before it gets too cold.
The day trip date – This is an idea I wrote about on my travel blog, but I think it’s a fun one to share here too! Set out with the windows down, your loved one beside you, a map and a sense of adventure! By playing this game, you’ll have no idea where you’ll end up, but it’s sure to be a fun time with your spouse! Read more here.
Go to an outdoor theater – We’re fortunate to have an amazing outdoor theater near us that does plays and even shows movies during the Summer. We watched one of our favorites there this Summer! Even if you don’t have a free community theater near you, search for a local drive in or something similar for a out of the ordinary (in 2016) date night!
Find a beach
Any beach will do. We have an ugly one near us, but it’s still great for an evening or even a day away! If you’re not fortunate enough to leave near the ocean or bay, maybe find a lake or a river nearby to enjoy with your beloved!
Sleep outside
While this is most-fun on the beach (listening to the waves as you fall asleep, is the best!), find a way to sleep outside, somehow while it’s still warm! There’s nothing like star gazing and chatting all night long!
Find history
Google “historical marker in *your city*” and find the closest ones. Check out what happened in your city in the past, and enjoy learning about it together!
It’s like a scavenger hunt for adults and it’s nothing short of awesome. Find clues online, search for things other people have hidden or hide your own for others to find.
Watergun fight
These sorts of games aren’t just for kids! Snag their water guns and have fun racing around the park trying to drench your spouse before they can get you! Water balloons would be equally fun, if you don’t have kids who already have a water gun stash to share.
If you are doing a fun outdoor date night while it’s hot, let me tell you a little secret… I discovered these this Summer and it’s made me a lot more comfortable all Summer long.

Stargazing sounds fun. That’s gotta by one of my favorite date night ideas that were listed. A friend of mine likes to try out new restaurants when she goes out on dates.

Water-gun fighting is the best option to try. Sounds like too much fun. You can also include bowling, it is also very adventurous and couples will definitely enjoy bowling together.

Hey there! When it comes to summer date night ideas, the options are endless. You could start with a romantic picnic at a local park or beach, enjoying each other’s company under the setting sun. For a more adventurous twist, try stargazing in your backyard or at a nearby observatory, finding constellations together. If you’re both foodies, consider a DIY pizza night where you create personalized pizzas and enjoy them while watching a movie. Another fun idea is to have a mini road trip to a nearby town or attraction, exploring new places hand in hand. And last but not least, a sunset kayak or paddleboard excursion can add a splash of excitement to your date night. So go ahead, mix things up, and create unforgettable memories this summer!
