This is one of those posts that my son may hate me for when he gets older (joking). . . But I thought this info wold be good to share in case some one else experiences something similar.
A couple of months ago my son got bullet impentigo on his bum. At first I thought it was just a bad diaper rash, but I could not get rid of it! It is really abnormal that my boy get a rash. I use a special spray on his bum when I wipe him (cloth wipes) the spray helps prevent and treat diaper rash, so rashes have not really been an issue for us since I started using that. It seemed strange that he suddenly got a really bad rash, but I kept “treating” it with the spray and it kept getting worse.
The rash looked like blisters popping up on his bum. The worst ones would swell and then sort of crater in the middle like a volcano. They didn’t cause him any pain or discomfort but it got bad enough that I decided to switch him to disposables for a week or so in order to be able to use some diaper rash cream on him. (Fun Fact: Rash cream is a no-no when using cloth because it messes with the absorbency of the diaper!)
I tried the rash cream for several days and the spots kept getting worse and more plentiful. I tried google-ing diaper rashes/blisters on baby’s bum, and came up with some SCARY stuff. BAD BAD idea :P
Eventually one of the blisters got very swollen and was starting to get infected so I took him in the dr. After a quick examination she told me it was ‘bullet impentigo’. . . A bacterial infection. (yuck!) I forgot to ask how he got it, but regardless she gave me an anti biotic cream to use on him and after another week in disposables to use THAT cream it cleared up!
So I happily put him back in cloth. Felt good to use cloth again, I really missed my routine, and the way his clothes fit when in cloth diapers. He is skinny and tall so pants fit him better with the thicker diaper.
A few days later the impentigo was back. With more spots time than before! :(
At this point I realized that he must have caught it the second time around from his cloth diapers. I decided to look into stripping his diapers and try that. I did, and it worked great! the diapers came out so fresh and beautiful and soft, and he is impentigo free yet again! yay!!!
Oh the adventures with little boys.
It is so crazy to me how many little infections and random things can happen to them!
