If you’ve been on social media at all this week, you’ve probably seen the buzz about the new app that is supposed to pay you for keeping your phone turned off while you’re driving in the car.
They say you just install the app and anytime you’re driving over 10mph, whether you’re the driver or passenger, you’ll be earning!
Wondering if this is too good to be true. Let’s check it out together!
Here’s what actually happens when you download the app:
Can you make money driving your car without your phone
The On My Way app is definitely getting some attention – I mean all those screenshots of cash earned DRIVING AROUND look amazing. But what exactly is that cash.
Well, one thing it’s not is actual cash money. OnMyWay cash is not the same thing as real-life cash. You can’t cash out to paypal unless you’ve referred 250+ people, which is virtually impossible for the average user.
Even if you couldn’t cash out to paypal, if you could get gift cards or other useful resources in exchange for OnMyWay Cash, they just might get me onboard, but that’s not how it works either. Instead, it appears you save up OnMyWay Cash to earn incentives like discounts. Essentially coupons.
Here’s a screenshot from OnMyWay:
Coupons could be useful for sure, but seems like a lot of work when you could just use a site like retailmenot, swagbucks, or ebates (ebates offers HUGE actual cash incentives for referrals too!) to grab coupons quicker and easier.
OnMyWay does also offer “marathon rewards” but they seem like more trouble than they are worth to try to earn.
Warnings before you download
If you want to start racking up OnMyWay Cash in the hopes that one day there will be a paypal or amazon gift card option – there are a couple other things to be aware of. One, is that it is a HUGE battery drain. People are reporting their batteries draining even when the app is not running and the phone is locked. YIKES.
Essentially this app seems to be getting a lot of information from users, encouraging them to refer their friends so their friends information can also be mined…and what they deliver isn’t great.
You know, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. And there are much easier ways to get coupons. I’ve used Ebates and Swagbucks for years and LOVE both programs. In fact, I’ve earned plenty of cashback through the years with Ebates and saved up my swagbucks throughout the year to cash in for amazon and target gift cards to buy Christmas gifts every single year. No sketchy app needed.
And yes, I earn a commission if you sign up and useeither of those two sites – but you will too if you refer your friends. And even better, I’ve used them both for most of my adult life and can highly recommend them both from long-term personal experience.
Have you tried the On My Way app? What was your experience?
