How to choose a baby name that you both will love.
Choosing a baby name is always a challenge, but finding one that you and your partner agree on is oftentimes the biggest difficulty of all! One thing that can assist in the naming process is to discover what type of name category you each prefer. When you know the basic categories, the types of names that you each like and dislike, you have a much better chance of finding some middle ground to select the perfect name for your new baby girl or boy!
When my husband and I were considering names for our children, it quickly became obvious that he preferred more traditional names like “John” or “Matthew”, while I preferred more unique names such as “Ezra” or “Elyana”. When we figured this out, we were able to compromise by choosing unique names that have more traditional nicknames.
With a little creativity you will discover a baby name that is the perfect choice for your growing family!
I’ve compiled a list of 10 basic categories to consider. You can use these to discuss preferences with your partner and narrow down your choices from that point. With each category, there are a few names listed that are representative of the types of names usually associated with that particular category.
- Nature Inspired – Dawn, Rose, Lily, River, Reed
- Geographic – Dallas, Asia, America, Dakota, Paris
- Action Inspired – Hunter, Gunner, Mason
- Unisex – Alex/Alix, Jordan, Morgan, Taylor, Ryan, Hayden
- Doubles – SueAnne, JoBeth
- Traditional – Susan, Bill, Henry, Sally
- Unique – Elisha, Delaney, Joelle, Elias, Dante, Zane
- Religious – Mary, Esther, Ruth, John, Mark, Noah, Titus
- Vintage – Mabel, Dorris, Helen, Preston, Elwood, Vern
- Family Names
Do you feel drawn towards any of these choices? Is there a category that both you and your partner appreciate? If you’ve already named all your children, what types of names did you choose?
