For all of my married life we have been on a budget. It started from necessity, but even as our income increased we’ve learned to keep a tight budget so we can save for our future, and pay off our house as quickly as possible. That means I run a tight ship when it comes to the extras around the house, even things like decorating! I’ve learned some fun ways to freshen up rooms and make everything look a little brighter or more festive with the seasons.

One thing I’ve recently learned is that you can really Save on home essentials with Dollar General! The kids and I were in there the other day and I was pleasantly surprised to find things that could help me redo my entire bathroom or kitchen decor, spruce up my living room and office and even comfy new sheets and pillows for our bedrooms. That makes life easier, since it’s all actually affordable. Plus, you can find DG coupons on their app for a lot of those things, especially the rugs!
I went in with $30 determined to breathe some life into my house because I’m tired of dreary winter! Now that our Christmas decorations are down, I’m feeling like everything looks all sad and boring since we aren’t quite ready for Spring decorations yet.
One trick I’ve learned is that purchasing one small piece for each room of the house can make it feel like you’ve redone everything. I prefer this to going all-out in one room, because then the rest of the rooms look drab by comparison! PIcking up a few pieces, one for each room at a time is affordable and can help you slowly redo your whole house! Especially at Dollar General prices.
I started in the kitchen section and grabbed an adorable little rug for in front of my sink. We had one but it was old and an awkward brown color. Some one had given it to us, so we had kept it in there since we bought our hosue two years ago. It didn’t match anything…it was totally time to upgrade it! This braided rug matches my walls perfectly and makes me smile every time I turn the corner into my kitchen!
I also picked up a little vinyl tablecloth for the dining room that matches. I’ve got two preschoolers so vinyl tablecloths are essential.
The next room we tackled was the guest/kids bathroom. It’s a bright yellow color. I always intended to make it rubber-duck themed in there, but never quite got around to purchasing all the decorations I wanted. Now I’m not too sure of the ducks but still love the yellow! I came across these framed sayings and knew they were perfect!
The kids love seeing them in their bathroom. I thought they’d just be cute for decor, but they are actually helping them remember to brush their teeth without being reminded, which is super helpful! They remind me now before I have the chance to tell them. Huge win for our family! And the yellow matches the walls perfectly.
The last room I worked on was the living room. You would be amazed how much simple black frames can liven up a room. I framed our new family photo and it immediately brought joy to our living room, seeing our extended family right there on the mantle.
Photos are framed memories and I find them the easiest and often the thriftiest way to decorate your home. If you don’t have the budget for much decor, just run to Dollar General and grab some frames. The 8×10 frame above was $3. Totally affordable! You could buy several and make a large collage on the wall or create a mantel piece like I’ve done here. The possibilities are endless! Don’t let your budget hold you back from sprucing up the house a little…especially during these cold winter months! Take down the Christmas decorations and put up something even better!
Candles are another great option for brightening up a room on a limited budget. Grab a few new candles in various scents from Dollar General and place them all around your home for another, more affordable decorating option.

Like you, I really appreciate cheap house decorations. However, I have never decorated my house before with things from the dollar store, but maybe that is something that I should do. What are some more items that you have been able to get from the dollar store for your house?

It was Dollar General, not the dollar store. Not being picky just giving the info for people who were looking. The dollar store literaly has things for only a dollar. Dollar General is a discount store that can have any price.
