You may have already read first set of Life Hacks for Your Kitchen that I shared earlier this month, which I hoped you found useful, but I still have loads more tips to share with you!
So, without further ado, here are 14 more life hacks for your kitchen!
- When cleaning BBQs, use a cut raw onion to remove the built up grease from the grill. It works like a charm. If you like to talk and cook at the same time and have cremated the food onto the grill then you might need to use a chisel first!
- If you have black granite worktops, which are very difficult to clean then use a little Windolene spray on them. It makes them sparkle and leaves the surfaces smear-free.
- Chopping boards can get a little stained, especially if you enjoy cooking a good curry, but there is a simple solution to a cleaner chopping board. Use some lemon juice and baking soda, create a little paste then use this to clean your chopping boards. It brings them back to life again and saves you from having to buy a new one.
- Lemons seem to have many uses and from what I can see, there is more lemon in cleaning products than there is in my lemon cheesecake! Anyway, I digress. If you want your fridge to smell nice then get a lemon, cut it in half and put the 2 halves in your fridge, one on the bottom shelf and one on the top. The lemon will absorb any odors and give you a pleasant lemon fresh smell when you open the fridge.
- Possible health warning here. Washing powder is absolutely amazing for taking tea stains out of spoons, cups and even the dirty roasting tray after a nice Sunday lunch. Be sure to wash it all off thoroughly though or you’ll be tasting soap powder in your tea the next day.
- Make your kitchen cupboards easier to clean by spraying them with polish. The polish will stop much of the grease getting stuck on them. (be sure not to get any polish on or near the food!)
- Carving a Sunday roast can be a messy experience. To keep things a little tidier, when carving the meat, put a piece of cling film underneath your chopping board to collect any pieces that fall off. This will keep your work surface clean and free of germs. If you have a dog then you can just empty all the bits into its bowl.
- Use a wedge of lemon to remove stubborn limescale from taps. Just ram it on and leave overnight, the next day you can remove stubborn lime scale easily and with minimal elbow grease.
- Want to clean stubborn dirt from tiled floors? Simply dissolve 3 dishwasher tablets in a little bit of hot water, mash them up into a thin paste and leave on for a couple of hours, then put on rubber gloves (the tablets contain caustic soda) and you can scrub off in-ground dirt to reveal a floor surface that you could eat your dinner off of!
- Possible safety warning here. Did you know that you can sharpen knives on the bottom of your mugs? The rim around the bottom of the mug is usually not glazed and provides a perfect sharpening tool. (be careful!)
And here are a few practical kitchen tips.
- When planning your kitchen, make sure your utensils are near the cooker hob and not in a drawer the other side of kitchen!
- Encourage children in the family to cook from fresh, it’s a basic life skill everyone needs. Also get them to grow their own herbs and vegetables. It will be fun for the kids to watch the vegetables grow and it will give them a sense of achievement. It will also bring a smile to their face and yours as you’ll need to buy less.
- Revamp your old kitchen by removing the kitchen doors, paint them in a neutral color and for a second coat, paint with a color of your choice. Lightly sand away bits of the top coat for that shabby chic worn effect. Hey, presto a new looking kitchen!
- Don’t save your best china for occasional special occasions. Suddenly you will look at them 20 years later and wonder why haven’t we used them more. Enjoy them while you can, life is short.
And finally, quite a lame tip but it does work and it was very popular, if you want an easier life in the kitchen, then let someone else do the cooking.

Baking soda also removes tea stains very easily, and it’s safe if you don’t rinse it all off.

Thanks for sharing! I really like the putting-the-lemon-halves-in-the-fridge idea. I use lemons/lemon juice for so many cleaning reasons, but I’d never heard that one.
