It’s hard to remember everything that a child could need when sick, and they often aren’t able to communicate their actual needs instead of just what they feel like they want. Here are a few things to keep on hand and in m ind as soon as one of your children starts to get sick. I’m so appreciative to Maty’s Healthy Products for sponsoring our conversation today.
Give them what they need
-Lots of water, hydration can be a challenge and oftentimes kids will forget that they need to be drinking. Make sure you are tallying how much they are drinking and when so they can stay hydrated.
-As silly as it sounds popsicles can also help your kids stay hydrated and can feel really good on a sore throat too.
-If they are upset to their stomach make sure you stock up on crackers and other gentle foods.
-Home remedies like Maty’s Healthy Products. Grab their cough syrup and vapor rub at your local CVS, Walgreens or dozens of other stores.
-Hand sanitizer is another must-have because you’ll want all the kids (healthy and sick) washing their hands as much as possible to keep the sickness from spreading.
-Tissues you’ll need them in every room. Just trust me on this.
-Buckets, I hate that this is true, but if your child has a stomach bug or flu you will want them sleeping with a bucket with instructions on where to aim if they get sick. I’ve found 5 year olds have about a 0% chance of making it to the bathroom before throwing up so this is essential.
Manners while sick
It seems that once one person in the family gets sick it’s not too much longer before everyone gets it! Enforcing strict rules and manners can sometimes help reduce the number of family members that end up catching the sickness or how badly every one gets it.
-It all starts with hand washing, like we mentioned above. Make sure each person is washing hands before and after they eat anything and after blowing their noses or coughing.
-Teach your kids to cough into their sleeve or a tissue instead of into their hands. This can help stop germs from spreading through hand contact or into the air.
Keep them busy
It’s hard to keep little ones entertained and still while they are sick, but here are a few tips to get you started.
-Playing peek-a-boo is a great place to start with younger kids. You can lay next to them on the bed and get even the tiniest of smiles from them, even while they feel yucky.
-One thing our family always enjoys is looking at family picture albums. It keeps everyone still and on the couch but we’re able to relive happy memories and laugh together.
-Movies are the go to idea for a reason, when all else fails, put on shows, movies, youtube…whatever it takes to keep them still and resting.
Treating symptoms
-Be sure to discuss options with your child’s pediatrician first and foremost!
-Natrual Remedies – Our pediatrician often suggests that we start with natural remedies. Maty’s Healthy Products can be a good place to start in promoting a healthier lifestyle with your kids. Their cough syrup is packed with over 10 immune boosters and their vapor rub has eucalyptus, peppermint, wintergreen and absolutely no petroleum!
-Be sure to keep the lines of communication open with your child so you know how they are feeling and if/when new symptoms arise.
