Shopping for baby showers is one of my favorite things to do. Now that my “babies” are off to preschool and seem to be getting bigger by the millisecond, I enjoy getting to browse the baby isles once again and choose some special gifts for a new mom.
I’ve attended a lot of baby showers through the years and I’ve noticed some recurring themes.
At baby showers, new moms usually end up with WAY more clothes than a baby could ever hope to wear, a few unique/customized presents and a huge stack of diapers all in the same size.
I love watching the present opening, seeing the excitement and the ooohs and ahhhs over the adorable baby clothes and I’m totally guilty of wanting to buy all the cute baby clothes for new moms too. I can’t even handle walking by those adorable little onesies and don’t get me started on mini bowties or dresses.
But I really do try to pass along something special for the new mom herself. She may not know it yet, but she’s about to be swept up into a title wave of emotion and focus on another living breathing human, more than ever before. It will be all too easy for her to lose herself, as we all sometimes do…but I want to help her, and let her know that it’s okay.
So when baby shower shopping I like to head to Target, and then go practical, even if it’s not the same as buying those sweet baby tutus for a baby girl or the tiny suspenders for the new baby boy.
Practical things like a diaper genie elite are definitely the top of my list. Especially now, that I can use that gift as an excuse to sign her up for the mommy time rewards program. To use the rewards (for you or a friend) you simply purchase participating diaper genie products, snap a photo of the receipt, upload it for points on your mommy time profile and then redeem your points for gift cards. The gift cards are from fun places like zappos, sephora and nice restaurants…which means you can do your part to make sure mama takes care of herself too!
While I’m loving the new rewards system, saving mama time and stress in her everyday life is really what I’m trying to do with gifts like this. It helps her house to keep from smelling like diapers (yay!) and saves her so much time and trouble during those middle of the night feedings and emptying of the diaper pail throughout the week.
In addition to the practical and fun you can always splurge for a restaurant gift card to help her fit in one last date night before baby comes. Even things like nail polish, or new slippers will help her feel more comfortable and like herself even during those last days of pregnancy and the first ones with baby!
I’ve found that giving gifts like these is a fun way to anticipate a new mom’s needs, without telling her how hard it is going to be or “warning” her with some horror stories. I love the blissfully excited stage of motherhood that happens while mama is waiting for her baby to be born and I would never want to take that from her. But finding ways to show that I’m here for the days that aren’t quite as blissful as she was hoping they would be, hopefully goes a long way.
