We did several things with our son to help him prepare to be a older sibling, but my absolute favorite was the big sibling gift he got when baby was born. The idea that older siblings can get a special gift on the day their new baby brother or sister is born is not a new one, but we decided to take the idea and add our own unique twist!
We got him a build a bear. And not just any bear, one with my voice pre-recorded in it saying “I love you” to him. I hid the bear in our house and told my MIL where to find it, so that she could give it to him while I was in the hospital having his sister. He was used to having me with him 24/7 so it was a huge comfort to him, to be able to hear my voice telling him “I love you” even though I wasn’t home for a few days.
My MIL said that after he got the bear he pushed the button for an hour straight and just grinned. His baby sister is now a year old, and I still sometimes hear him pushing the button and listening to my voice as he goes to sleep. Precious memories of a very special day for our family. You can read all about our build-a-bear experience here. It only cost us $20 for the bear and recording!

Did you do gifts for the older siblings when the new baby was born? What types of things did you use for gifts?

Such a cute idea! I’d never thought to purchase a sibling gift until I had my 2nd child and a sweet woman bought my oldest a little gift. That’s when I realized the value of it! Also, my other favorite thing to do is buy a gift for mom that is not baby related, because sometimes she gets a bit overlooked too. (Plus, its just so much fun!)
Thanks for sharing,

What a great idea. My husband and I are in the process of bringing home our adopted children’s (sibling set) younger brother. I’m thinking that this might be a good idea for us to use with our children in prepping for the new arrival even though they are 4 1/2 and 3 and the new child is two. I still think it will be an adjustment for them.

This is something that we never even thought about when we were having children. I think it’s a wonderfully clever idea. I’m sure that he will always treasure that bear! Thanks for sharing with SYC.

Great idea. I have a few weeks left and have been trying to come up with ideas for my daughter before the new baby comes. I love the idea of leaving something for her to have while I am away so she knows I am thinking of her.

Yes, we got my son a Thomas the Train Station House when my daughter was born 18 months ago and told him that it was from her. I actually like your idea better because it’s a keepsake! My son loved the train set at the time but he’s already outgrown it and I can see it heading to Goodwill soon. Thanks for sharing at All Things Pretty!

This is a fantastic idea! I will have to keep it in mind if we are lucky enough for #2. The hospital separation is my biggest worry. How sweet to have something with your voice!

My 2 year old son loves Elmo, so we got him a plushie and gave it to him as a present from our daughter when he came to see us in the hospital. It’s been 3 months, and he still talks about it, and loves the toy.

our oldest little brother bought him Lightning McQueen slippers. I think there may have been some other lightning toy too, but lightning was a big hit at that time.
