Moving is such an exciting time of life…but have you ever noticed how life’s most exciting times are usually also the most stressful? There are so many hidden details when you talk about a big move, especially if you are changing cities. Packing can seem like a daunting task, which is why I’ve compiled a list of things that can make the packing process a lot easier.
Here are a few things that can make a cross-country move a whole lot easier.
Start by downsizing. As you pack each room have a garbage bag handy to get rid of all unneeded items. It’s easy to get it full-on packing mode and just toss everything in boxes without taking the time to consider if you really need everything you’re packing. A good rule to have is if you come across something you didn’t even remember you owned, toss it!
Another way to make downsizing easier is to get rid of furniture you don’t need or don’t want. Instead, plan to rent furniture at your new location. This will allow you to try out new styles and you can keep it for as long as you’d like. CORT Furniture Rental allows you to leave behind all the old furniture that didn’t really fit you, and means you don’t have to try to MOVE all of it to your new place. Only take things you LOVE into your new home. This will ensure it feels and looks like a fresh start when you get there. I love that it’s a furniture-on-demand service. They are there when you need it but can be gone when you don’t any longer. They even have “move in ready” packages that would be perfect for your cross country move!
In addition to downsizing, make sure everything you pack, works! If anything needs repairing just get rid of it.
This is also a great time to downsize your sentimental items. I try to give each member of the family one large box for sentimental things. They get to choose what goes in it, but once they fill the box they’re done. This helps diminish fights over what needs to be purged or not, since everyone has the same amount of extra space.
Packing boxes
Don’t worry about buying expensive boxes from moving companies, instead ask around! A lot of your friends could have boxes lying around in the garage that they’d be more than happy to get rid of. After you’ve checked with friends, go to local businesses and ask when they throw out their boxes from new shipments. You can get so many boxes for free this way! Never pay for boxes again!
When packing, one thing to keep in mind is box size. We’ve found that oil boxes are perfect for packing books. The size and shape of the box makes it easy to carry and you can fill it to the top with just books.
Keep in mind when packing large boxes that someone will have to lift them. One tip is to cross-pack a little bit. When packing up my heavy dishes, I might put them in a large box because of spacing. However, I’ll fill the rest of the box with my daughter’s stuffed animals or our extra bedding. This allows for extra padding around the dishes and takes up a lot of space in the large box without adding any considerable weight.
Always consider the order that you are packing things in as well. There might be somethings that stay unpacked until the last minute, while others can be packed months in advance. Make a last minute packing list” for each room. Tape it to the door, so that when other family members are helping pack in that room they know what to leave behind for the last day or week.
Never use trash bags for packing. This is an essential packing rule. If you use trash bags for packing they will be thrown away. Some one will come along trying to be helpful and move the bags to the curb. It’s just not worth it!
Do you have any packing tips to share? Or are you making a cross country move soon? I’d love to hear all about it in the comments!
