Something happened today and I knew I’d have to make a part two of the Popular love songs that are actually about parenting. – This post does contain affiliate links to the songs I mention, in case you want to find or buy them for your own collection.
You see, most days my son positively begs to leave the house. He loves shopping, school, playing outside and generally anything that involves leaving the house. Unfortunately, this morning we had an appointment outside our home and he completely lost it. Screaming and sobbing like I haven’t seen him do in at least a year. All because he wanted to stay home for the first time in his life.
I couldn’t help but think of these lyrics from the P!nk and Nate Ruess song Just Give Me a Reason
I’m sorry I don’t understand where all of this is coming from
I thought that we were fine
(yeah, we had everything)
Your head is running wild again
my dear we still have everything
and it’s all in your mind.
How many times a day could this be said to toddlers. I have NO IDEA where this tantrum/attitude/energy is coming from… it MUST be all in your mind kiddo! (The first verse of this song also fits beautifully with motherhood)
While that will be one of my favorites, this next one is another that definitely makes me smile.
If you turn on the radio these days, chances are you will hear this song! I can’t help but think about my kids when I hear these words.
What would I do without your smart mouth?
Drawing me in, and you kicking me out
You’ve got my head spinning, no kidding, I can’t pin you down
What’s going on in that beautiful mind
I’m on your magical mystery ride
And I’m so dizzy, don’t know what hit me, but I’ll be alright
Perfect right? Oh, but it gets better! The bridge says:
My head’s under water
But I’m breathing fine
You’re crazy and I’m out of my mind
I mean, yeah. That sums it up. the head-under-water feeling that is motherhood. The knowledge that toddlers are basically crazy and drive us out of our minds in the best possible way.
and of course the lyrics that every one knows:
all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
If those aren’t the most perfect words for a mama to sing to her baby… The crazy, the rough times, the suffocatingly difficult days all add up to one thing, and that is the immeasurable love that parents have for their kids.
And of course, we have to end on a sweet/sappy note.
I don’t want to miss a thing by Aerosmith (written by Diane Eve Warren)
I could stay awake just to hear you breathing
Watch you smile while you are sleeping
While you’re far away and dreamingI could spend my life in this sweet surrender
I could stay lost in this moment forever
Every moment spent with you is a moment I treasureDon’t wanna close my eyes
I don’t wanna fall asleep
‘Cause I’d miss you, baby
And I don’t wanna miss a thing
Once again, that sweet sentiment, these days are passing so quickly, and while I do treasure each last moment of my sleep (since those are few-and-far between) I also don’t want to miss a moment of their littleness. They are growing so quickly, it truly seems like every time I blink they are bigger, doing more things saying more things and reaching milestones while I still haven’t come to terms with the last milestone hit.
This motherhood thing is the sweetest kind of pain…but at least they make lots of wonderful songs about it!
Have you ever turned on the radio and heard a love song you thought described parenting perfectly? I’d love to hear yours!
