Both of my kids have become very excited about super heroes lately. They watch animated shows featuring their favorite characters and then trot around the house performing daring stunts themselves. I’m constantly trying to teach them that doing something dangerous doesn’t mean you are brave and that superheroes have other valuable traits too, like kindness and willingness to help others. Today, I’m partnering with Mattress Firm to share with you and my kids, a way we can all act like a super hero for the day!
This Summer, from May 2 – June 26, Mattress Firm is hosting a clothing drive. They are collecting new and gently used clothing items for foster children. The clothing items will be donated to local foster care nonprofit partners and distributed to foster children and foster families in need. This is one of six foster drives Mattress Firm holds each year. This was the first time I had heard about it, but we bagged up some clothes and took them right over!
It was a great way to have a conversation with my son about why were bringing clothes to Mattress Firm and what they would be used for. This is a way that we can help kids as they go into a foster home. So many times all they take with them is the clothes they have on their backs. So it’s a wonderful opportunity to be able to give to them!
In addition to this initiative they are also holding a social media contest to raise awareness for the Mattress Firm Foster Kids program.
All you have to do is submit a photo of your child making a donation – there are three ways to enter. Entries are accepted on Instagram or Twitter beginning Monday, May 2 at 9 a.m. CST through Sunday, May 22 at 11:59 p.m. CST using the hashtag #Donate4FosterKids, or online at www.MattressFirm.com/KidHeroes from May 2-22, 2016, coinciding with National Foster Care Month.
The photos will be held in a content gallery here where voting will take place to win a grand prize.
Finalists, and later the contest winner, will be determined by the most votes received on their submission and the top five photos with the highest number of votes move onto the Finalist Round from May 23 through May 29. The winning super kid hero will receive a $500 Toys “R” Us gift card and a $5,000 donation to the local Mattress Firm Foster Kids nonprofit partner of the winner’s choice!
It was neat to have those conversations with my son and know that the clothes were going to be used to help foster families in our area. The drop-off process was really quick too. We were in and out in about two minutes which I appreciated.
I hope you have time to go make a drop off sometime in the next few weeks! I look forward to seeing your photos popping up on social media with the campaign hashtag too! #Donate4FosterKids
