While Hurricane Harvey has fallen off of the radar of most non-Houstonians even around most of Houston we’ve settled into a more normal routine post-hurricane.
Many people have been able to repair and move back into their homes, and businesses are slowly reopening as well. (Our grocery store will be back in TEN DAYS and my husband is seriously considering camping out because he’s so excited).
Sadly, there are still hidden after affects of the disaster that have the potential to have a lifelong, devastating impact on Houston’s most vulnerable residents.
One huge after affect has been brought to my attention today, and I realized that I knew a group of people who would JUMP at the chance to help relieve this struggle from the shoulders of Houston’s vulnerable.
Free the Captives is an organization that works here in Houston to rescue young women who have been trafficked. They partner with our local law enforcement to get girls out of dangerous situations and to safety.
But they also take it a step farther. Free the Captives has job programs and counseling set up to help the girls re-enter society in a safe and healthy way.
One of their most successful programs has been their Summer internship. Each year the young women are able to come and work at Free the Captives, hand making candles that are then sold online and at trade shows all throughout the Fall and Winter season.
Sadly this year because of hurricane Harvey many of the shows where the candles are sold were cancelled, leaving Free the Captives with around 1,500 GORGEOUS candles left to sell.
With the trade shows cancelled, now they all need to sell online, which is where YOU come in.
There are several wonderful fragrances to choose from like, citrus fresh, lavender, french vanilla and the freedom candle. You can order them and have them shipped straight to your door.
Best of all, every time you light your candle you can know that it helped to save a life.
Yes, our city is rebuilding, and most of us, we’ll be okay.
But the vulnerable ones in Houston still need everyone to rally around them, and to help.
Would you consider buying a candle to help end sex trafficking in Houston?
One of the things I love most about Free the Captives is that they walk with the girls after they have been rescued. The candle program is just one step in their job programming that helps the young women rebuild their lives and prepare to re-enter society in a healthy, healed way.
I would be so grateful if you would consider helping our city in this small way. Each candle counts and can go a long way to helping this sustainable business model continue to work for years to come. I’ve watched this organization sell out of candles year after year, as they have worked to build not only a strong organization, but also an empowering business for these young women, and I don’t want to see it end because of an insane natural disaster.
Even if you are not able to purchase a candle right now, would you consider sharing this opportunity with your friends and family so that we can all work together to make sure this program can continue it’s incredible work against teen sex trafficking in our city. Thank you so much!!!
