The holidays are a busy time for all of us, and they can also be really expensive! I try to save money year round, but there are a few specific things that can be done to save during the holidays, in addition to the normal savings throughout the year!
- Eat. More. Turkey? – After Thanksgiving turkeys go on sale at a steep discount. I cook a turkey every week after Thanksgiving and then freeze the meat to use throughout the months and weeks to come.
- Delay the Gifts – Talk about doing gifts with your significant other the week after Christmas. That way you can get some great post-christmas deals! It also helps to not have to buy all your gifts with only one paycheck.
- Lights OUT! – Christmas lights are beautiful and festive, but leaving them on can get pricey. Consider setting a timer that turns them off at midnight, or just turn them off before you head to bed for the night. This way the lights (and electricity) aren’t draining your bank account all night long.
- Swagbucks (referral code) – Swagbucks is an awesome online earning site! I’ve been using it for over a year now, and I love it. You earn points that you can cash in for gift cards (which can be used to help with Christmas gifts)! You earn points by playing games, searching the web, doing surveys and even doing online shopping!
- Say No – Remember that you don’t have to attend every holiday party or go do every single Christmas-themed activity that is out there. There is nothing wrong with keeping things simple and only doing those things that you truly have time and money for. More time home with family is not a bad thing, and you can always start new fun traditions that won’t break the bank!
I’ve started an entire pinterest board dedicated to saving money during the holidays. Check it out and follow along!
