This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Rug Doctor. All opinions are 100% mine.
We bought our house almost 2 years ago now. The condition of the carpet was pretty sketch when we bought it. As in our feet would be black after walking barefoot through the house for a few minutes. We had the carpets deep cleaned, which helped quite a lot, but it still was astounding for months afterward how much dust would come up from the carpet ever time I vacuumed.
It has gotten much better over the last two years, but our carpet is still not the best. I was really excited to try out a Rug Doctor, I always see them in stores and wonder if they really work. The price isn’t too bad to “just try” but moving the furniture and coordinating a day where I’d have time to do it was not at the top of my priority list for the last couple years.
We tried one yesterday though, and well. Now I’m kicking myself for not doing it sooner!
We started with pushing all of the furniture out of the living room and into the dining. The kids thought this was HILARIOUS and did their best to help (spoiler alert: they weren’t actually helpful).
It was then obviously time for a good vacuuming and then we were off to rent a Rug Doctor. After getting Rug Doctor cleaners as well it totaled out to around $50. That included stain remover for use as things come up with kids, and we only used half of the bottle of deep cleaner I purchased. That means that next time we’ll only have to rent the machine itself which was $29.99 at our store. I’m thinking back to when we hired professionals to deep clean the carpets and it was hundreds of dollars. Youch.
Once we had it home, it was easy to get started. I just mixed hot water with the deep cleaner according to the directions on the bottle and then poured it into the bottom of the machine. I was thankful there were clear instructions on the machine itself so I didn’t have to keep track of extra paperwork (though there were manuals as well, I found I didn’t need them).
Every so often I’d have to empty out the water and refill. Wow. Can we just talk about how gross this water is? It was absolutely black after cleaning some areas of the living room. EEEEW.
Half of me didn’t even want to show you these photos. SO GROSS.
But, if you are like me you’ve always kinda wondered if those Rug Doctors were worth getting, so I want to show you the real deal in all its nastiness! I know looking at carpet pictures isn’t the most fun, but I was astounded at the difference it made!
Even my five year old said “wow, it looks like when we moved in!” All through dinner last night I kept glancing through to the living room and staring at how nice it looked!
I’m still shocked that our floors look this nice! It feels so good to have it look clean in there. I didn’t notice how much of a subliminal stress the general dirtiness of something like carpet can give a person, but I definitely noticed when it was gone. It immediately made our whole home feel cleaner.
Basically, I can’t recommend it enough! They also have an upholstery tool which you can use on cloth furniture, mattresses and stairs! I thought that was super handy. You can find a rental location near you using their locator tool. It’s funny because I knew I’d seen them plenty of times in stores, but when I was ready to go rent one I had to look it up too, because I couldn’t remember which stores I’d seen them in.
Here are some parting tips I’ll leave you with if you go rent a run doctor of your own:
- Vacuum before and AFTER – I ran the vacuum one more time after finishing with the deep clean and it pulled up a good bit of dust that the Rug Doctor had brought to the surface.
- Don’t over soak – Going over each part of the carpet once or at the most twice is sufficient. Doing more than this can make the carpet overly wet and can cause it to take too long to dry.
- Watch carefully – Keep an eye out for when the bottom basin of water is empty. Then you’ll just be brushing the carpet and not deep cleaning.
- Turn on fans – When you are done, turn on the air conditioner, heater or fans in the room to keep humidity from the air and help the carpet to dry faster .
- Leave the home – We opted to take the kids out to lunch and run an errand or two after deep cleaning. By the time we got home the carpet was dry and we were able to put the living room back together.
It’s a great way to clean your house for Summer, I hope these tips help you get the most out of your experience and deep cleaning!
